Allow me to let you in on a little secret. There’s a way to have your iPhone alert you to incoming calls you don’t want, and calls you must answer.
This free iPhone app is so clever it creates custom iMessage tones, Twitter tones, and custom alerts for Calendar and Reminders and Mail. You’re in control of which tones your iPhone uses for almost everything.
Custom Ringtone Nirvana
There must be a few hundred ringtone apps on the iPhone App Store. Some have price tags. Some don’t. Some work well, others can leave you frustrated in the knowledge that silence is golden.
Ringtone Maker is one of those elegant iPhone apps that creates custom ringtones which you can assign to callers in your Contacts.
This app also lets you create custom iMessage tones, and custom sounds for Twitter, Mail, Alerts, Calendar, and Reminders.
If you can remember which sound is associated to which action or caller, custom ringtones give you an audio heads up to pick up or not.
The interface is decent. Select a Ringtone, Text Tone, Mail Alert, Tweet Alert, Calendar Alert, Reminder Alert, or even an Alarm Clock Sound.
Ringtone Maker gives you controls over the length of the sound, start location, fade in and out points, as well as custom speeds.
Use the iPhone’s built-in microphone to record a sound and use that as a ringtone or alert.
That’s the good news. There is some bad news. Ringtone Maker is free, but displays advertisments. The pro version upgrade costs a few dollars and dismisses the ads.
Of course, this app won’t create ringtones from songs that are DRM protected, so make sure the music you want to use can be copied into Ringtone Maker from your iPhone.
The only problem I have with it is trying to remember which song or sound I used for which action on my iPhone. Maybe the radiation from my iPhone is destroying a few brain cells with every call.
