Try The Nutty Way To Improve Your Mac’s Speed And Save Battery Life That Actually Works

Friday, February 1, 2013 | Jeffrey Mincey Posted In Mac App Reviews

AppriorityIs your Mac running too slow? Is the battery conking out faster than ever? If only there was a Mac app that could give you longer battery life and make apps run faster?

Wait. There is. And how the app works is a little bit nutty. It’s like having a switch on whatever slows down your Mac, or sucks up the battery juice. Flip the switch and the Mac goes faster, and lasts longer.

Prioritize Performance

The more apps you have running on your Mac the more the CPU has to work, which can easily slow down the performance of some apps. Appriority can change that.

The more apps you have open and running that use the CPU also use the battery. Unfortunately, we can usually only us a single app at a time.

Appriority can modify which apps use the CPU and drain the battery.

What it does and how it does it could be considered a little odd, but it works. Appriority suspends and resumes applications as you switch between them.

Think about it. You have five or six battery-draining apps running at once, all slowing down the Mac’s CPU, and using battery.

But if you can switch between each app and turn it off, so to speak, when you switch, the app you’re using can run faster, and the batter lasts longer.

Setting up Appriority doesn’t take much effort, either.

Appriority

Click on the image above for a larger, pop up view with more detail.

In fact, Appriority doesn’t need configuration at all thanks to the Auto Configurator.

You’ll see a list of which apps are using what percent of the Mac’s CPU. Once configured (or, use the Auto Configurator), Appriority will suspend apps that are not being used.

Once suspended, the app uses less of the Mac’s CPU, therefore, much less battery power. Your Mac will run longer and cooler.

If you want, you can tell Appriority which apps to suspend. Simply add those you use the most to the app’s list with a click. Switch to a suspended app and it runs again. Close down Appriority and your Mac returns to its CPU-hogging, battery-draining ways.

All of that is great in theory but how does it work in real life? Most of the time, it just works, and the Auto Configurator is enough to begin saving battery power. Sometimes, I had Appriority not allow a suspended app to restart. That’s disconcerting and a restart was necessary.
