Try This Clever, Cheap Mac App That Makes Your Desktop Wallpaper Smarter And Useful

Monday, February 25, 2013 | Jack D. Miller Posted In Tips and Tricks

Smart WallIf ever there was an idea whose time has come it’s the Smart Wall app. This is exactly the kind of customization and personalization that Apple should incorporate into OS X.

Instead of photos, images, designs, ore more kittens or scenery, why not make the Mac’s Desktop Wallpaper actually useful? You know; time, date, stocks, weather; that kind of useful.

A Truly Useful Desktop

Smart Wall is a very inexpensive app that brings more value to the Mac’s Desktop wallpaper than any scenery, animal photos, or graphic designs ever have.

A simple control panel gives you options to turn the Desktop’s wallpaper image into a center for valuable information.

Use Smart Wall to place information overlaid on top of the Desktop wallpaper image.

Add the weather forecast, complete with graphics. Setup the date and time in large letters and colors to match the wallpaper image.

Got stocks? Follow your favorite stocks with a list that is updated throughout the day. You control the fonts– size, color, font, and location on the wallpaper.

And, yes, a few pictures are worth at least a few hundred words.

And, another sample example with a rearrangement (all controlled by the Smart Wall app).

And, a quick look at the controls (which are actually fun to use).

There. Just what you wanted for your Mac.

Smart Desktop wallpaper.

Smart Wall rocks with a tiny 99-cent price tag, but turns the Desktop wallpaper into something useful as well as pretty.

Setup is simple, though a little trial and error is required to match your font sizes and colors with whichever Desktop wallpaper image you’ve selected.

All that’s available so far is time, date, stocks, and weather, but adding an RSS feed news headline would be a big plus.

Overlording It

Mac360's free app reviews, news, and commentary are supported by your kind attention to the nearby sponsoring overlords and their mostly benign, non-contagious, sometimes animated messages (like a visual vibrator). Visiting an aforementioned overlord today helps us pay for ear wax removal services. When you help out by giving attention to any sponsor during today's visit we're able to afford nail polish (but only for one nail). Hence, we appreciate your brief visits to these necessary overlords.

About Jack D. Miller

I work for a US technology company in Paris, France and switched from Windows PCs to the Mac 12 years ago. My wife said it would improve our marriage, give us more friends, and reduce stress. I guess that two out of three isn't bad.
