excaim The funny thing about all these forums that are popping up about my P.C that are going to end is, it’s a p.c that is messing up once again in my house. I used to get so mad because it’s a sign I am going to have to reinstall soon again. Now that I am done, if any of my old lady’s p.c.’s puke again including her dell laptop that has been going solid for a couple of years but needs a reinstall also due to being sunk down with spyware and who knows what viruses, a computer that was once fast but is now sluggish as this has happened to all my p.c’s through out my life sooner or later. She can get in the car and go with me and we can go bring more Mac’s into the family. I want this to be a p.c free house by the end of this year and if that means throwing all my p.c. trash in a box of junk into the street then so be it.

That’s all.

This isn’t because they’re “PCs” though. This happens to all machines. Macs use the same hard drives we do in PCs. You just got a bad hard drive, it happens. Especially now that HDD platter manufacturers are starting to have problems making higher capacity hard drives (The failure rate is climbing because of this).

I wouldn’t throw away that machine of yours, especially since you spent so much on it. From the looks of it, it looks like you picked excellent hardware. Don’t let a bad hard drive make you give up on the entire platform.

If you’re just going to throw it away, send it to me, I’ll find a use for it. wink

As for, the spyware, It is possible for Windows to run Virus and Spyware free. I should know, my machines are living(? heh) examples. Not much effort at all either, Just a free virus scanner/on-the fly detector and a router, that’s it.

Very good machine. actually the raptor is only a 80 gig. The head manager of Tigerdirect.com and I spent almost five hours on the computers picking out only top of the line stuff for it. I mean I put stuff in it I knew I would never use such as the sound blaster xfi card with the fiber optics in the front and jacks for your guitar or piano. I don’t play anything. The small capacity raptor was meant to run the OS and OS only, that is how the manager told me to do it, well I put other stuff on there also. I wonder if I should just do it his way and put windows on that drive and everything else on anther drive. If I wipe that drive with wipe drive and reinstall windows, the bad boot sectors will be gone.

If you’re just going to throw it away, send it to me, I’ll find a use for it. wink

When Bad sectors are starting to affect the file system, they can disappear when you format and reinstall Windows. Since bad Sectors that affect the file system are recorded by the file system (NTFS) and not the hard drive. The hard drive only records and maps bad sectors out before it runs out of spare sectors (All hard drive platters have extra sectors that the OS doesn’t see, incase of situations like these). If it runs out of spare sectors that the hard drive logic can remap to, there’s nothing it could do to prevent the OS from seeing it.

The question is: Do you quick format the hard drive when reinstalling Windows (Only records the Master file Table), or do you do a Full format (Checks every single sector for errors as the installer maps out the file system)? That could be why they suddenly disappear when you reinstall Windows.

I think that the question posed really summed up my philosophical experiences with apple.  If you look at it logically you could probably buy two PC’s for the price of one Mac.  But life is not just about who has the fastest processer, it’s what you do with it.  I would much rather have one apple laptop that is three grand, than four consecutive failed PCs (which I do have, HP’s) and a laptop all giving me the “send or dont send?” messages that come straight from the devil himself.  anyways Macbook air has it’s market.

I hope Apple brakes into the high income/ business market for an ultra portable laptop for people who are not going to be editing a large movie with final cut, although they probably could if they really needed to.  I hope they overthrow IBM for buisness use, they already have a lot of schools in America using apple.

I hope they can take back the educational market. It used to belong to them completely with the Apple ][, but just as so many school districts were hesitating, feeling they couldn’t afford all new Macs, the Justice department was nice enough to hand Microsoft the opportunity of a lifetime. As part of their antitrust settlement, (and the only part they actually complied with) MS was “forced” to donate billions of dollars worth of computer equipment to schools all over the country. Guess what? They all run Windows! Now we have another Microsoft monopoly and a whole new generation of school kids who have never been exposed to anything else. I’ve read that a few school districts have gotten tired of the problems and the constant massaging that Windows requires and are starting to come back to the fold, but we can only hope for a tipping point soon. I can’t see some harried school IT coordinator/teacher “upgrading” to Vista!

I think that the question posed really summed up my philosophical experiences with apple.  If you look at it logically you could probably buy two PC’s for the price of one Mac.

Just as you can easily buy two Kias for the price of a Toyota Camry. Both get you where you need to go, but in different modes of comfort, security, reliability, resale value, and so on.

You could probably get five different cell phones for the price of an iPhone, yet the iPhone experience, even for the extra money, is arguably a much better experience, though both make phone calls and do other things.

I just got back from a quick trip to the 5th avenue store here in New York. Why? To see the MacBook Air. Despite a few shortcomings, I fully believe Apple will sell plenty of these Macs. The screen is delicious, the keyboard is great and the whole package feels MUCH lighter than 3 pounds, and I’ve used the Sony and Toshiba ultra lights in the past, both of which are around 2 pounds. There’s something about the size (it’s larger than other ultra lights) and the weight combination which makes it seem lighter.

I hope Apple brakes into the high income/ business market for an ultra portable laptop for people who are not going to be editing a large movie with final cut, although they probably could if they really needed to.  I hope they overthrow IBM for buisness use, they already have a lot of schools in America using apple.

It’s becoming more clear that Apple’s strategy is disciplined and patient. The Xserves are the darling server of the elite geek because it’s more fun to use than anything Windows. It’s loved by education outlets because it works better, is easier to set up ad maintain, and they’re screaming fast, plus a good value for the money.

I’d like to see a quad core 24-inch iMac soon.

It’s also obvious to most of us that Apple will never make low-end junk just for the sake of market share and revenue growth. The model Apple choses is different. Build the kinds of products you want to use yourself.

If a person can’t afford Apple’s products, that’s OK. That’s why there are Dells and HPs and Microsofts around the world. Filler.

The film The Pirates of Silicone Valley certainly makes it clear, indicating that Gil Amelio, among others, became concerned by such a schism, leading, in part, to Jobs’ ouster. Consider, though, that Jobs is a crusader, and it is certainly within the scope of the probable.

Just an FYI, but Gil Amelio wasn’t around when Jobs was thrown out back in 1985. Jobs went on to found NeXT, bought Pixar from George Lucas, almost lost all his money keeping them both going, got Apple to buy NeXT in 1996/1997, and got Amelio thrown out of Apple in mid-1997. Amelio was on Apple’s board in 1995 and took over after yet another CEO failed to turn Apple around.

Apple’s current successes are not because of anything Amelio did except buy NeXT and bring Jobs on board as an ‘advisor.’ And aren’t we all glad that Jobs is back and Amelio is gone?
