There is not much Apple can do outside of the courts.  The courts are the ones that have to shut them down.  I am not sure if the courts have ruled on any part of this yet…I would imagine the court wouldn’t look too kindly on one of its rulings being ignored, so I doubt they have ruled on this yet.

I’m probably not the only one who sees this whole scenario as a dangerous can of worms which could spin Apple’s efforts to purify the OS X experience and one which could tumble down a very slippery slope.

What if the courts agree with Psystar and they’re allowed to continue to sell clones? How long will it be before there’s a ‘defacto standard’ way to install OS X on generic PC boxes?

OMG!!!!

I like the idea of a lower priced Mac, though.

I think the danger is that then Apple needs to “support” a whole lot more configurations and hardware.  This dramatically increases the chances of problems and bloat.  I too like the idea of a cheaper mac, but I don’t want to see problems like those already creeping in to Apple recently.

That’s insightful considering that Apple is having trouble supporting their ‘platform’ today the way they did just a few years ago. OS X everywhere seems to be the mantra at One Infinite Loop these days.

I’m concerned that the “problem creep” isn’t so much a creep as it is a swollen river.

Thank God for iPhone 2.0.2.

Yeah I think the creep is really them rushing stuff to the market.  I think this bumpy patch will be resolved.  Fact is Apple has had a remarkable run of quality until lately, but they have had issues like this in the past.  For instance OS 8.2 was complete garbage.  I think one difference now is that there are a lot more users that upgrade right away and so the problems get more attention.  That certainly doesn’t mean they should rush things out the door.  Lord knows M$ doesn’t rush anything out.

That’s the conundrum, I guess. I would love to have a honkin’ Mac OS X machine for $500, but that means I’m spending my money somewhere else besides with Apple. A big chunk of Apple profits come from hardware, right? Still, Apple has a monopoly on the Mac.
