Troy, keep posting questions and keep the dialog moving on the forums. That’s what works the most. I remember something about Mac360’s readers including a large percentage of Windows users. Mac users tend to be better educated, make more money, have fewer kids, drive nicer cars, and vote Democratic (that whole Blue state/Red state thing). It makes sense that there would be plenty of Mac users in education, science, and professional services.

Hello everyone!

I’m extremely new to the list. I’m not sure if this is appropriate for this thread but the topic title of Mac360 set up OS X server key worded a question.

How many users on Mac360 work with Macs in education or Mac systems administrators in education?

I am always interested in learning how schools place their Xservers into production, how they manage them, and solutions they may have come up with. Working in education and IT is a proverbial horse of a different color than most corporate shops.

It would also be great to get to know other Mac users too. I’m a little isolated out here in eastern New Mexico.

Troy

Troy! Me. I work as a sys admin in a private school near Chicago. We have a few hundred Macs and PCs, including a handful of PPC Xserves. All but a few dozen Macs run Tiger, and we’re slowing deploying Leopard in various classrooms. Apple’s Remote Desktop is the tool of choice to keep everything running. We use the Xserves to store valuable files as part of a backup scheme, and a few of them act as multimedia file servers. There is nothing easier to manage remotely than Mac OS X.

A Mac360 reader asked me if our site would get moved to a server using OS X Leopard. Probably not too soon, is the unofficial answer from Ron and Jeffrey. Moving to another server actually isn’t a huge deal. We’ve moved the site many times in the past, finally settling on an Apple Xserve at ServerLogistics in LA which runs OS X Tiger Server. Transferring a bunch of web site on Tiger to Leopard is not trivial, so say they Mac360 technohounds. However, should ServerLogistics add a Leopard Server on a quad core Xserve someday, Ron and Jeff would salivate daily until the work to move Mac360 was done.

Kate’s been giving me grief about not posting to the Mac360 Forums often enough. Why? I can’t win the monthly iPod!!

grin

I’m going to spill some beans. Ron’s personal blog isn’t running on his Mac mini any more.

wink

Welcome, Troy. Sorry for the long delay in reply. Everyone leads such a busy life. I work in a school and we have Macs all over the place, even some that run Mac Classic. I know the school also has a bunch of Xserve file servers but they usually don’t let the teachers go anywhere near those.

Another Mac360 regular, Natalie Nowak, also works as a Mac sys admin in a school.
