Google Video: One More Reason Microsoft Is Afraid.

GoogleMicrosoft’s 90-percent market share should not make the software giant comfortable. Here comes the Mac, Linux, and Google. Google Video now works on Mac.

Microsoft needs to be afraid because the desktop no longer matters. It’s the web and Microsoft does not control the web. Not that they don’t want to or haven’t tried.

Take competition. Please. Microsoft has done their best to kill off all competitors; desktop, servers, software, media, the Internet.

Microsoft won the desktop wars. Even Steve Jobs said that back in the 90s. Let’s get over it and go on to the next great thing. Except the next great thing was already here. The browser.

As much as Bill Gates probably delighted in crushing Netscape and winning the browser wars, they lost the hearts and minds of users by leaving poor security as the standard for Windows.

While the Redmond giant feasted on all comers in the 90s and fell asleep, the barbarians are at the gate. Mac. Linux. And Google.

Google reigns supreme in the online search arena and has begun branching out to provide information of every kind to every one. Google is a verb, for crying out loud.

Google this. Google that. It must drive Bill Gates nuts. Good.

Now there’s Google Video and it works for the Mac. How? You need QuickTime, right? Or Windows Media Player, right? Or the gawd-awful Real player? No? Click Here for a look at video simplicity still as an infant. Google Video.

Yeah, you’ll need broadband cable, DSL, or a decent connection to the ‘net at work, but you’ll like what you get. Google is collecting videos and making them available as if they were web pages.

Right on the home page of Google Video is an episode of the TV show “Everybody Hates Chris.” Click and it begins to load in Safari. Or Firefox. Or Internet Explorer.

Hmmmm. Who needs Microsoft?

Do a search on Google Video. For now, there’s plenty of news, documentary pieces, informational videos, some entertainment here and there. But the list is growing daily.

Did I mention that it works on the Mac? Google is making the desktop irrelevant. It doesn’t matter. Mac. Linux. Windows. Who cares? Click and get stuff. That’s the new future. And Google knows it.

I found a video of kids jumping off the rock at Hawaii’s Waimea Bay. A video of the Irvine City Council. Fox News and CNN. Hmmm. I looked, but didn’t find a video from MSNBC. I wonder why?

Google isn’t making any huge announcement about this as yet. Video takes up plenty of bandwidth and requires plenty of server power. Video and video communication is coming to your Mac. Or PC, or Linux box.

It won’t care which operating system you use, so sit back and enjoy it. Me? I’m still waiting for iTunes Music Store to become the iMovie Video Store. I hope I don’t have to wait too long.
