I’m A Sucker For Free Software That Works Great.

I buy software. If I use it, I buys it. One of my favorite Mac OS X applications is SnapZ Pro X from Ambrosia Software. Think of it as Screen Capture on steroids. If you can see it on the screen, it can get captured.

Pictures. Windows. Movies. Much more. It’s just there. It’s on my Mac. It works.

It also costs $69 (movie capture version) or $29, depending on how much money your don’t have.

That’s not exactly FREE, is it, Bambi?

Enter Yellow Mug Software’s SnapN Drag. It’s screen captures software that’s more than what comes with Mac OS X (much more) and more than expected—considering it’s cost.

It’s Free.

I like to send email attachments of things I find on the web—photos, images, statistics (like from a database graph), and so on. It’s a pain in Mac OS X’s screen capture. SnapZ Pro does it in a snap but you gotta pay.

SnapN Drag does it, too. Take screen shots, window shots, or a selection shot. Click. Snap. Drag it to the Desktop. It’s that easy.

There’s even a built-in timer so you can “snap” an image of the screen after so many seconds; similar to the time in your digital camera.

What? You don’t want to drag an image or a window image to the Desktop and then load it into Mail just to email it to someone? Me either.

SnapN Drag lets you “drag” the image right into Mail.

You can save the images in JPEG, PNG or TIFF, depending on your need for quality and compatibility.

The developers are Yellow Mug Software and they seem to have found a nice niche with Mac OS X utility applications.

Not all applications are free, but none are expensive, and most fill a need not handled by OS X (perhaps handled by other applications from Adobe or Macromedia—we know how much of a bargain some of their applications can be).

Even more interesting is what other Mac users seem to think of Yellow Mug Software. For example, if you do a search on MacUpdate.com or VersionTracker.com you’ll see that everything on their list of applications has at least 4 stars (5 is perfect, 4 is very good) or more.

I’m not crazy about YemuZip (yet another Zip tool) or SizzlingKeys (global hot keys for iTunes) but EasyBatch, FileChute, and FolderBrander are best of breed in the Low End Mac category.
