iPod Users Voice Opinion On American Idol’s “Star”.

InboxOne of the things we learned in college communications classes is that you cannot NOT communicate. American Idol’s Simon Cowell doesn’t own an iPod or a laptop and prefers “personal communication.” Really?

You’d never know it by some of Simon’s curt, gruff, brusk, and direct comments to contestants on American Idol.

Tera’s American Idol’s Simon Votes Thumbs Down On iPod garned the most responses from Mac users.

Some voiced their opinion of Simon’s opinions in less efficient style. Mac user “mailmeat” brought everything back to earth:

“One thing’s for sure: if Mr. Cowell is fazed by the iPod because he finds it “too technical”, he surely won’t be buying a Dell DJ or a Creative Nomad.

The iPod, especially on a Mac, is about as un-technical as digital music gets. Of course, a thumbs-down on the iPod is worth very little from someone who won’t touch a computer to begin with.

That would be like asking me to judge between the contestants on American Idol--which I never watch.”

Cowell’s implication was that the record companies were too occupied with the 16-25 year olds to pay attention to the 30 to 50 year olds. Guess what?

We received more response from Mac users in the 30 to 50 year old range than any other group. Simon missed what the iPod is all about.

Mac user “dwlayman” laid it out:

“I’m 49, have had a 2nd gen iPod for 2 years. I use it in the car (via cassette adapter), when I’m doing house work, and when I do my (45 minute long) dental regimen (I have periodontal disease--have to be thorough).

It allows me to listen to more music then I would have time for in my leisure time. I’m mostly a classical person, although I have some Bruce Springsteen, and other old rock. Most of my music I get through iTunes Store.

My daughter will get this one when she makes the honor roll in school, and I’ll get a 20G model.”

What? The iPod isn’t just for teenyboppers anymore? Actually, the teens were probably the slowest to adopt to iPods because of the cost involved. Now that the iPod is just $99 what do you think will happen?

Maybe Simon likes “thin” girls and assumes they’re the only ones who buy iPods. Mac user “ottawa_watts” seems to think so.

“Im 36 and my wife is 33 and we both own 20gb 3rd gen ipods. My friends at work 30-40yrs old also own ipods.  My mom who is 65 this year wants a ipod.

My daughter who is 7 wants ipod.  Simon Cowell is a bitter man that needs to come out of the closet and deal with loving himself.  He cant love the hip and cool and simple ipod if he hates everything including himself.

Ever notice how he is nice to thin girls no matter if they can sing or not but if you are a normal size girl he’s all like “you’re fat” - what an ####.”

Finally, Mac user “mercpg” actually had some positive things to say about Simon.

“Actually, I always like Simon. Yeah, he’s sometimes brutal.  But, frankly, he seems to be worst to the people who really need a good swift kick in the pants.

I’m pretty sure Simon has never used a Mac, iTunes, and an iPod combined.  So on that score, I’m sure he’s ignorant--it doesn’t get much easier.

But, like much of the music industry, I’m sure the iPod kind of scares him. “

A poll is in order to determine the age groups of iPod users, though it would be skewed because so many teenagers don’t read web sites like this one. So mine tells me, anyway.
