Is A Genius Bar Situation Comedy Coming To TV?
What’s up? What’s new on TV for Mac users? Apple’s Genius Bar goes prime time on CBS. The Hollywood Reporter says CBS has committed to shoot a new situation comedy pilot called… you guessed it. Genius Bar. What a hoot that’ll be. The whole idea for the comedy came from Krishnan Menon who is considered a consumer marketing expert. The show would be based on people who work at an Apple-like Genius Bar. Keeping the show’s focus on comedy, the Genius Bar employees flirt and intermingle with the sexy, cool and hip employees at a store nearby.
Abercrombie & Fitch? Or, something with a shorter name? After all, how many t-shirts do you need that say Abercrombie & Fitch, front or back. The producers of That ‘70s show are reportedly lined up to do the writing. That begs the question (among others), ”What kind of plots are hatched at a Genius Bar?” Mac Genius Bar employees are not necessarily known for being of the humorous species, unless you’re a woman and think all computer guys are funny. I’ve seen a few women helping customers from behind the Genius Bar, but that’s a vision I’m trying to forget. Plots? Who needs plots when you’ve got young and sexy folks woking behind a counter helping people with their computer problems? Still, think of the possibilities. Each week there’ll be Night Court-like characters showing up with the same problems, or something totally unheard of. Will ”Genius Bar” take a few pot shots at Windows users, and treat them as if they’re still in pre-school? Or, will this be one of the newer genre of situation comedies where the laugh tracks don’t match the humor? That’s usually because there’s mostly laugh tracks, and little humor. Menon has some experience with Apple, having worked for marketing agencies DDB and others where he was involved in the launch of the iMac and iPod. What do you think? If you were producing ”Genius Bar”, what situations of humor would you come up with? There’s no guarantee that the show will ever grace your TV, unless is shows up on Bravo as part of Brilliant, But Cancelled.
