Mac Diary Or Mac Journal? Which Don’t You Use?

DiaryWho do you know that has a diary? It’s my scientific opinion (I asked around) that more women have diaries than men. Maybe like 10 to one.

I ask because I ran into a nifty little Mac application called myDiary, which features video entries. I have a diary. My husband does not. Would you add video clips of your deepest personal thoughts, like Star Trek’s personal log, to your Mac diary?

Back to the questions before the original question. Do you have a diary or journal? Second question: are you a male Mac user or a female Mac user. My guess is that if you have a diary, you’re a female Mac user. If you have a journal, you’re a male Mac user.

The Mac makes for a pretty decent diary. Mostly, we don’t let others use our Macs, and if so, as a different user.

For example, my husband and I do not share users on our various Macs. He has his space. I have my space.

I have a diary. He has a journal. MacJournal, to be specific. It’s the life journal with all life’s bells and whistles, including video clips from iSight.

The diary I use now is called viJournal, which seems a contradiction. Journal sounds more educated than diary, right?

Both MacJournal and viJournal are loaded with features, far more than needed for quick dairy-like entries, but handy for more thoughtful personal missives. I’m getting into the personalized video clips in the diary thing. Maybe our children will find them interesting when we buy the farm.

My husband isn’t into the video clips of his thoughts, but has plenty of video clips of our children running around all over. That means, as the camera guy, he’s seldom in the video, which seems to me to defeat the whole purpose of a personal journal.

What I especially like about viJournal is the iPhone version, and the ease of use of the Mac version. I can write what I want, add photos, audio clips, and video clips, to the viJournal library.

Journal syncing between our iMac and MacBook is easy, too. There’s also a distraction free full screen editing feature. Funny, but my distractions make noise, drop crackers and cookies in the sofa, and chase dogs until they cry. Kids. Not dogs.

My husband swears by MacJournal for different reasons. He likes the ability to update his blog site, and the ability to upload photos to Picasa (I use Flickr). He’s also into creating a family Podcast via MacJournal.

See? Lots of features. But he calls his a journal and I call mine a diary. What’s the difference? Honestly, it’s gotta be a guy thing. Or, a girl thing, depending on your personal persuasion.

Diary carries the connotation of something pink, book-sized, with a little lock on the front, and page after page of heart rending confessions about true love or love lost or bad hair days.

Journal carries the connotation of something reflective of the family news events, children going to the zoo, hiking in the woods. See? It’s a girl thing vs. a guy thing.

Finally, the question for Mac360 readers. Do you have a journal or a diary on your Mac?
