Pigs Are Flying. Mac OS X Is Better Than Windows.

PigsI love this business. There’s always something new. Things change. Surprises abound. Former Mac user and writer turned Mac nemesis John Dvorak says Mac OS X is better than Windows and the Microsoft empire is grumbling. How? Assaults by Google, Apple, LAMP.

He forgot to mention Redmond’s internal decay, but, hey!

If you’re like me, you have a handful of web sites you hit regularly. Thanks to RSS feeds, you get notified when a new article hits the streets. So it was this morning.

MacDailyNews, the wild west show of Mac sites, alerted me to another John Dvorak column on PC Magazine about the lack of buzz on Windows Vista.

I like reading John Dvorak. Love him or hate him, he’s a great writer, wonderfully quotable computer industry pundit, and he’s been eating a lot of crow regarding the Mac recently.

This latest piece is “Windows Vista: Where’s The Buzz.” John admits that there isn’t any. That’s hard to dispute. Apple, with about 5-percent of the US personal computer market, seems to get about 80-percent of the press buzz with Mac OS X, the Mac mini, the iPod lineup, a move to Intel chips, and a video product that doesn’t even exist.

It isn’t the lack of buzz about Windows Vista that makes John’s article a worthy read. Farther down in the article is a headline. THE FUTURE OF DESKTOP COMPUTING.

This is where the fun begins. Dvorak is on board the wagon. The beginning of the end for the Microsoft Empire. How?

First, “Vista will open the door to what I believe will be a radical change in the computing landscape.” But not in Microsoft’s favor. A number of radical, yet cohesive forces are converging on the Redmond software giant which could topple the Empire.

Destroy Microsoft? No. Substantially reduce? Yes. How?

Apple, Google, LAMP. Google is ruling the desktop search scene (eating Microsoft’s lunch), has plenty of money and may just be months away from offering a Google version of Linux. Call it GoogleX. It’s just a good version of Linux with a prettier, simpler desktop. Download it, buy it, install on your PC. NO more Microsoft.

OK, Linux is also part of LAMP. LAMP is Linux, Apache (the web server), MySQL (the free database) and PHP (the open source scripting language. LAMP is taking over much of the low end and mid-range server market, and, thanks to aiding and abetting by IBM, is heading into the mainstream IT divisions.

LAMP is free. So is Google. Mac OS X is arguably the best desktop OS ever, and millions upon millions of Windows users now LOVE something from Apple and have QuickTime (the trojan horse of the future) installed on their PCs.

Meanwhile, back at the Redmond Ranch, what is Microsoft doing? Languishing? Crumbling? Pissing off vendors left and right? Awash in bugs, drugs, and thugs (alright, I just said that because it rhymed well)?

The Windows empire is crumbling in a stack of security bugs, bad press, no press, and gazillions of ho-hum yawns by customers eager to find relief elsewhere. Apple’s got it. LAMP’s got it. Google wants to give it.

Now, John Dvorak, the scourge of Apple faithful for a decade or so, says, “the Mac OS is already better than Windows in its modern look and feel as well as its functionality. I see too many smart people with Mac laptops nowadays.”

Truly, pigs are flying.
