Saturday InBox: They Love Me. They Really Do

This past week we got blasted for our poke at another Microsoft Total Cost of 0wnership poke; Click Here.

Leigh figured we were way off base. We were. It was a different base, though:

“Tera, you misunderstood the piece, completely. It was a play on words; “0wnership” referred to the vulnerabilities and widespread exploits of machines running Windows. When Mac OS X was called a “toy,” it was done tongue-in-cheek.”

Marc of Hotmail fame seemed to “get it” OK and pointed out a number of things about ‘nix users, too. We’re Mac OS X users (10.3.5 and Panther Server) so does that count as a ‘nix user? Probably not:

“Of course hackers would prefer to use a *NIX or Mac OS vs the swiss cheese M$ operating system(s). Hackers want to use something secure and stable - since some hackers try to hack into each others systems (just for fun) - and having a non-M$ OS is a great start security-wise.

Also, you need to have technical knowledge of your hardware to fully enjoy a *NIX, while Mac OS users enjoy the *NIX core in OS X. The default settings in XP leave the user wide open - not to mention Windows-based computers are the targets all the scumware (spyware, keyloggers, etc) creators when surfing the internet. ”

It seems like just yesterday that the “Toy” piece went live. Hmmm. Blasts from the past are always a treat. This one is a follow up on our popular “backup” piece. Seems like we’re not the only ones who like SuperDuper. Even “thebeatles” use it:

“I have tried every backup solution. I used to admin the backup of 400+ Macs at a huge aerospace company, and Retrospect was the right tool for that job, but SD! is by far - by far, the best desktop utility I’ve seen or used. The support from this company is outstanding - and I haven’t even bought the product yet! I highly recommend this for personal and those users that (like myself) support a large number of Macs. ”

Bambi’s piece on Drastic Plastic Surgery from you Mac drew only one, rather unexpected, response. Click Here for the details. Suffice it to say that we’re working on some Bambi and Tera desktop pictures. Wouldn’t that be cool?

Do you mind banner ads sprinkled here and there? A girl’s gotta make a buck.

Finally, we started the week off (that would be last Sunday) with an unusual Double Poll. Click Here for the details and comments. The poll got the most comments, although brief. For example, Marc and Milly the Kidder chime in:

“I really think that you should’ve included OmniWeb in your list of browsers, esp. with the upcoming WebKit-based v5”

“Both iDVD and iMovie get used, but this vote should tell you something about why Apple has so much effort aimed at music with iTMS and iTunes and iPod. Music goes to the heart of a lot of people, young and old. We browse, we do email, we listen to music.”

We made a quick adjustment to the survey so OmniWeb users could chime in. And boy, did they. A rockin’ 2-percent of voters chose OmniWeb. The hot new Firefox garnered a solid 11-percent of the votes. Of course, Safari took the show with a whopping 80-percent.

What was really notable was how little Microsoft’s Internet Explorer gets used on the Macs these days.

Oh, what’s a good price for Tera desktop pictures? People buy those things, right?
