“So, You Want To Watch All Of Apple’s TV Ads?”
You may also wonder why Apple doesn’t run more TV commercials highlighting Mac OS X over Windows. I can’t help with the latter, but for the former there’s a web site that displays a video history of Apple TV ads. It’s not just an historical site; it’s the actual TV commercials in QuickTime format. At least since the original “1984” Apple has often thought different in TV commercials and won more than their fair share of advertising awards for a variety of campaigns; from the original Mac to the iPod. Until CURQ came along, there was not, to my knowledge, a single website devoted only to Apple’s TV commercial history. Now there is (for as long as it lasts). Simply put, there’s a place to now to view Apple Computer television commercials; even very old TV ads, such as the award winning “1984.”
CURQ says: ”Over the years Apple Computer has produced some of the most inventive and useful computer and consumer electronics products on the market, and many of Apple’s ad campaigns have been as clever as the the products themselves.” ”Our goal is to create a web presence where people interested in Apple’s brilliant ad campaigns can download and view all of these classic spots.” That’s a commendable goal and the end result is a single site with many (most, but not all) of Apple’s TV commercials through the years. As you would expect, there’s a bunch of iPod TV ads. Apple’s ad agency, Chiat-Day (also responsible for the “1984” commercial which was produced back in 1983), won awards for the distinctive iPod series. For the Mac, there’s all those colorful iMacs from just a few years ago; including actor Jeff Goldblum. You may not remember, but the old clamshell iBooks (also in rainbow colors) had TV commercials. Most were easy to forget, though the ”Middle Seat” iBook is a favorite. There’s a bunch of PowerBook TV commercials, made memorable with Yao Ming recently, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar from years ago. The PowerMacs have their share of TV commercials through the years, including the Intel ”Toasted Bunny” commercial, and the Intel ”Snail” commercial. If you’re still using your Newton and hoping that Apple brings back a touch pad computer (keep waiting, Tera), you’ll rejoice at the selection of Newton TV commercials.
By today’s standards, many of the commercials appear almost sophomoric and comical, yet still show that familiar Apple resistence to the status quo. Of course, no collection of TV commercials about Apple would be complete without the award winning “Think Different” campaign. The video selection includes Pablo Picasso, Muhammad Ali, and the original Think Different ad which featured Albert Einstein, Bob Dylan, JFK, John and Yoko, Ted Turner, Ghandi, Hitchcock and many others. ”It is the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world… are the ones who do.” Great. Just great. While the CURQ collection isn’t complete, it’s nearly so, and an excellent source to view decades old Apple TV commercials.
