The Easiest Way To Synchronize Mac Bookmarks.

How many browsers are on your Mac? How many bookmarks in each browser? How do you keep them synchronized?

Of all the Mac browser synchronization tools I’ve found, this one works best, fastest, and works with all major Mac browsers.

By the way, I confess to using more than one browser at a time. Sometimes I’ll have three browsers up and running. I don’t like managing bookmarks so synchronization is imperative.

Most Mac users are Safari users. Next is Firefox. Then Camino. I love OmniWeb. What else do I use?

Sometimes SeaMonkey (what used to be Mozilla). Shiira and Opera, too. iCab. Yes, MSIE, but don’t hate me. Keeping bookmarks up to date on each browser is easy. I use Bookit.

There used to be (maybe there still are) utilities which manage browser URLs separate from the browser, inside another application. Sorry, that effort ended years ago. It’s too much work.

Having a second application manage bookmarks is like using another application to manage the words you’ll use on your word processor (how’s that for argumentation skills?).

I work in the public relations business which sometimes gets involved in web design. We have a need to check web pages on multiple browsers, both Mac and Windows, though most of our site designs are built on the Mac.

Checking on Windows is easy. If a web page looks good on MSIE and Firefox, we’re home free as that’s about 90-percent of all computer users. However, many in the office use Macs and they use different browsers all the time, not just Safari.

Keeping URL’s managed and organized is one thing, keeping them synchronized between Macs is another.

We do just that with Bookit. Mature and stable and dependable at version 3.7.x, Bookit is simple on the outside, and works like the dickens inside.

Simply put, Bookit checks all your browsers for changes in bookmarks, then synchonizes them so they’re all the same. There’s an interim step which lets you throwaway some URLs you may not want.

What EveryDay software says about Bookit doesn’t do this nifty application justice. It is remarkably simple to use, very handy, and the only way to truly backup bookmarks.

If you use more than one browser and grimmace at the thought of finding and managing bookmarks, yes, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it.

Bookit is very simple for those of us deeply committed to point and click.

Open Bookit and select which browsers you want to synchronize. The interim steps allow you edit bookmarks or create new bookmarks, though you can skip these and just synchronize.

Bookit supports Safar, Camino, OmniWeb, Firefox, Opera, Mozilla, iCab, Mozilla, Shiira, and, yes, still Internet Explorer.

There’s also the ability to mix browsers with .Mac and AppleShare (between Macs). It’ll also check for broken links and perform a few other chores. What it does best is sync bookmarks.

$12 can dispense with a lot of grief. The whole sync process can take less than a minute. What’s it need? Automated synchronization would be handy as an option.

The latest version carries .Mac synchronization so keeping the same bookmarks on many different Macs is a breeze. There’s a handy dock menu and a global system menu which means you can check bookmarks at any time. Still on Mac OS Classic? Bookit manages those bookmarks, too.

There was a time when dealing with hundreds or a few thousand bookmarks was a pain. Most browser manage bookmarks well, but Bookit lets them share the same bookmarks, no matter which browser is your favorite.
