Who among us would not like to have a mini-tower Mac for $399? What’s not to like?
Speed, expandability, loud fan, can all be yours for $200 less than a less equipped Mac mini. Mac clones dominate the headlines again. But not for long.
I read with great interest James Galbraith’s ‘How Psystar’s computer measure up to a Mac’ for Macworld. I noticed he didn’t call Psystar’s clone a Mac.
Macworld did what most of us would like to do. They built their own Mac clone,.... (excerpted).

I was shocked at how little the price difference between the Pystar and an iMac was. As long as you pay for the MacOS, the price difference dwindles down really fast. You can get a refurb iMac for $849, and you get Apple’s beautiful display along with it.
Seems to me that’s well worth it, and as as you say the performance difference is negligible.
Maybe this is why Apple has not yet taken action against Pystar. As long as they sell a legitimate copy of the MacOS with each system they are barely price competitive with Macs and don’t represent a threat.
The tinkerer market doesn’t buy Macs anyway.

Hmm…I had to check it out because, well, I’ve wasted inordinate amounts of time “tinkering” with systems in the past. Most often, just trying to find that n’th distribution of Linux that would finally free me from windows. So I did some reading on the MacWorld site about the Psystar. It lost me at noisy, and would not suspend. I am a recent switcher, using a C2D 2ghz refurb Mini. My three criteria for the Mini purchase were, small footprint, had to be quiet, and everything had to just work - the OS was really just a bonus. In the 4+ months I’ve used it I’ve come to appreciate all of those and more. I can suspend when I want to, cold boot faster than a work windows laptop can resume from hibernate, and hey it’s unix. And Leopard is very satisfying. All of that being a long preamble to say that for me, the clone, while interesting will never tempt me. I’m done tinkering. Hey though, I’m not a gamer either so….
