A Hot And Cool Back Up Trick Just For Mac Men

imageMy husband is a somewhat geeky Mac user. We both love our Macs but he leans more toward exotic hardware and I lean more toward practical software. Go figure.

What is it that really turns on a Mac man? Hardware. Gadgets. Tools. A new hard drive. My latest Mac gift to my husband combines all the best features of technological romance. Unique, removable, flexible, inexpensive, always ready.

Before you begin to get the idea that I’m some kind of gadget gymnast or techno.... (excerpted).

Besides Otherworld computing (also has FW option), I have seen other variations at Techbargains.com.  The most enticing is one that will take two drives at once.  Unfortunately is is just USB2.  USB can be tricky for data transfer.  I used an Eagle enclosure with a SATA drive that was so painfully slow, I gave it to a pc user.  My new Fantom external drive on the other hand has eSATA/USB and the USB functions much faster than the Eagle.

I use one that is just connectors for bare drives, made by Newer Tech.  It handles SATA and ATA, 2.5 and 3.5” drives, and it is cheaper ($30) - but USB 2.0 only, no firewire.  I got it from OWC.

A few companies make this device. I saw them advertised before Thanksgiving at dealmac.com. I wish they made docking stations for SCSI hard drives. I’ve got a few of them from Mac OS 7 days. Sure would like resurrecting those drives to make duplicate backups of my backups.

What a novel way to get extra years out of old hard drives. My first thought was, ‘Too bad it doesn’t work on the old IDE ATA drives.’ Then I counted my old drives. Out of six only one was not a SATA drive.

The Voyager needs some kind of frosted clear plastic bubble-like cover on the top. Then it would look more space age and less geeky.

You’re right. That thing is ugly. Fugly, even.

I want one.

The geek in me says it is a very cool way to get some use out of all those hard drives lying around the office.

Good find. Fun reading.
