There’s email, browsers, and word processors; the most personal of major applications on the Mac. For most, Microsoft Word is the top dog word processor, because it’s got every feature 12 committees could think of.
Those who actually write for a living have a different opinion. Enter Mellell II, which really may be the word processor for the rest of us who write for a living.
Mellel took forever to go from version 1.0 to version. The wait was worth it.
This is not.... (excerpted).

Yes, I do remember and still keep a copy of WriteNow 4.0 on my PowerBook to run in classic - but with my new MacBook classic was not an option under OS X 10.5 -
I’ve just found Mellel, & it is sweet - loads fast - you can set the interface to be as simple & uncluttered as WriteNow - It has a floating options menu which includes a document stats window with word count. Currently a fully free version 2.2 is included with DVD in MacWorld UK Dec 08 <includes a discount for version 2.5- Not living in UK? - you can find this magazine at many larger bookstores in US> Trial can be downloaded from Mellel too.
Other word processors with free download trials? 1) Nisus Writer & 2) Mariner Write - Also 3) Abiword for Mac it keeps getting better

Any old-timers out there remember WriteNow?
After 17 years using it, I think I need to move on to an OSX native—what’s out there NOW that’s as simple, bug-free, and “writer friendly” as WN? Suggestions? (NOTE: my Mac is a Microsloth-free zone, and I don’t need page layout, spreadsheets, etc., etc.—just something to write with!)
ALSO: Accurate word counting is a MUST.

A combination a lot of writers use is a basic fast word processor to get the text done, and a sophisticated layout program to make it look beautiful. Ideal would be Mellell, then export to Adobe InDesign for final design. Alas, Mellel does not allow you to export style information: your painstakingly-designed thesis with dozens of different styles, indents, quoted blocks in a smaller typeface, special paragraphs, footnotes small and large, etc., turns into a basic document with one single style throughout—say Times 12 point single-spaced with no indents—forcing you to create every single style all over again (in InDesign) and apply each of them one by one to each differently-styled part of the (very long) text! And forget about sending your beautifully-styled documents to anyone using Word, or ODF. What a shame! So if you are planning to write your thesis in Mellel, please think again.
