Fixing What Is Broken In Mac Leopard’s Dock.

DockOne of the really nice improvements in Leopard is the Dock. Before you Mac villagers grab the torches and pitchforks and head up to storm the Kayhill Kastle, hear me out.

Like the Dock or hate the Dock, most of us would agree that the Dock has some good characteristics, but Apple hasn’t listened to our collective suggestions. I figured out how to make the Dock even better.

The chrome ledge? Puhleeze. Let’s not go there. It’s colorful in a gaudy 3-dimension sort of.... (excerpted).

Apple changed the stacks setup and gave more options with 10.5.3. As long as you’re doing your system upgrades Adi’s simple solution will work from here on out.

I think you are all barking up the wrong tree. These fixes work but are very complicated. There is a much easier solution to all of this.

1. Assign an icon to the folder that you are using as a stack
  - To do this, double click on any picture that you want to use as the icon to open it in preview. Then select whichever part of the picture you would like to use as your icon (for the whole pictures simply click on the picture and then press command+a. Press command+c to copy the selection. In finder select the folder and press comman+i to open folder info. In the top left corner of this box where you see the folder icon, click on the icon and then press command+v to paste your selection as the icon
2. Drag the folder to the dock to create a stack. It will now show up as an assortment of files and the first file (alphabetically) will be the icon
3. click on hold on the stack in the dock till a list of options appear. Under “Display As” select ‘folder’ instead of ‘stack’, and the icon will immediately change to that of the folder that you are creating the stack for.

Thus there is no need to create other files, or run automator scripts. Leave it to Apple to have left a door open, we just have to find the door!
