Forget The Finder, Dock, Or Spaces. Conjure Different

ConjureWhatever happened to the Think Different mantra? Mac OS X Snow Leopard didn’t bring much in the way of insanely great new technology. In fact, not much has changed, at least, on the visible surface.

In my never ending quest to find the next great thing, I ran across a Mac application that defies definition. Conjure is more than the sum of its parts, yet the individual parts make it surprisingly unique. I hesitate to call it a virtual desktop, since the Mac has a desktop already, and via Spaces, even more desktops,.... (excerpted).

The whole ‘left brain’ vs. ‘right brain’ thing used to be what separated Macs from Windows.

Macs were always for the ‘creative types.’ No more. Windows PCs cause more constipation in the office work place than Dilbert’s pointy haired boss.

Conjure truly thinks different. I would like to see it working on a Mac with a tablet attached, or one of those modified MacBooks with a touch screen.

I can see why ‘some’ teachers would use Conjure. With a projector connected to the Mac it can be an effective presentation tool, with a bunch of utilities right there at their fingertips.

I just don’t see how we’re going to be happy with a touchpad that does NOT fit in the pocket.

Maybe I’m too ‘left brained’ to pick up on Conjure’s interface. It’s too touchy feelie for me. I like the organizers. I prefer to keep everything in the proper folder. When I can’t, then I shove everything else in a catch all folder.

Is that my right brain working?

Someone has taken a lot of time to truly think different. I downloaded Conjure and found it to be interesting and usable, but not after realizing that I needed to forget how to do some of those very same tasks the other way.

Kate is on to something regarding a touch screen. Conjure is made for hands and fingers as much as mouse and keyboard.

Kate! You must have been tired when looking through Snow Leopard’s feature set. The new Services is simply amazing. I can now create my own menu actions that show up contextually when I have text or files selected—just about anywhere. How did you miss that? Maybe a bigger cup of coffee next time.

Kate’s Note: Marion is correct (not about the coffee). Snowy’s Services are a big improvement, though a little too geeky for most Mac users, and few applications or utilities take advantage of what Services can do.
