Good, Bad, Ugly. More Backup Tools For Your Mac.

BackupEncore Review: We preach backups at Mac360. Whatever you do, and however you do it, back up your important Mac files.

How and which ones and how often and which application? There are more questions than answers.

The most important consideration may be the value of the files on your Mac.

Look at it this way—you turn on your Mac to start the day, and it doesn’t turn on. Nothing. No noise, no Finder, no hard drive. Nothing. Your hard drive is dead.

If you’re missing a few odd Word documents, an Excel spreadsheet or.... (excerpted).

sisteradmin, you’re right. Super Duper did what I expected, CCC did not; I rest me case. I expect a great Mac application to work. Also, as for using Migration Assistant, if it will not bring ALL of my data/settings to the new Mac (Intel specific excluded of course), I don’t want to use that either. I will be having to do this again soon with a new MacBook we will be getting - going from a cloned external FireWire drive to the new MacBook. ALL the data and settings must work… will probably just use Super Duper since it worked so good with me Pismo…

Mac360 “Magic Word”, (shhh…) steps43, as in, “It should not take steps43 to get data from one drive to another.”

I used SuperDuper! to clone Macs to an external hard drive, then use that hard drive to clone back to other Macs. It works fine even when the Mac models are different, so the clones are NOT Mac machine specific.

To the guy who used Carbon Copy Cloner to back up a Pismo and restore it on a G4: The OS must be installed with hardware specific components to work properly. Use Carbon Copy Cloner to BACK UP your machine or its drives. It will work to clone machines of the EXACT SAME TYPE, but not different models.

To upgrade your Mac, just use the built-in Migration Assistant in OS X. I just upgraded from a PB G4 17 to a MacBook Pro, and it worked great! I didn’t lose anything that is compatible with the Intel processor. My Office apps just work. I had to re-register my In Design App, and update some iMovie 6 plug-ins, but otherwise, it was a breeze.

I just tried Carbon Copy Cloner to back up then restore my Pismo to a PowerMac G4 I just got; it didn’t work properly - lost my user ID and password, I couldn’t login in to do software updates, and the Accounts preferences were gone. I tried all I know, no good.

So, I tried SuperDuper, starting all over again cloning the Pismo onto an external FireWire drive, then restoring it to the G4 - worked great! I have to send those boys some money! Using it in the free mode so far.
