My Mac’s file structure remains pretty much the same today as it did 10 or 15 years ago. I keep nearly everything—files, folders, documents, and stuff—in two places. My Documents folder, and my Desktop.
With hard drive space so cheap these days has file organizing become a lost art? Do we need to worry about saving space on a hard drive?
The answer to the former may depend on our definition for organizing. Just dumping all files and folders into the Documents folder.... (excerpted).

I have used What Size for a few years now and I find it indispensable. Whenever my hard drive seems to be getting smaller I run it and I have always found a minimum of 5 gigs of unnecessary files. They might be cache files that didn’t clear, once there were gigs of printer files for printers I didn’t have. Just recently I have discovered 20 gigs of swollen LIghtroom and iPhoto databases (usually I don’t copy my photos into their database) which means those databases duplicate pictures already on my drive. I love it What Size. It used to be free and when an upgrade happened and they started charging I bought it anyway because I thought the developer deserved it for all the space he saved me.

Try GrandPerspective to see what’s on your hard disk. Rather unusual visual display, but very informative. Free too.

Have used Whatsize for years, has been great program - little ticked now that they charge for it. So I have been looking at other choices and during the process ran on to a program called Baseline. This program is Excellent, not free, but if you have to pay for one or the other this would be my choice. It can take multiple snapshots of your drive over time and show you the changes that have taken place. It also has a function which finds all the duplicate files on your drives so you can manage them also. Plus it is FAST. Give it a try before you buy. Quite impressive.
