What’s Up? Is Firewire Dead Or Dying At Apple?

FirewireOne of my favorite Mac technologies is Firewire. Yes, it’s available for PCs, too, and shows up in many other devices, including audio and video, but it’s an Apple technology that first appeared on Macs.

The way things are going with Firewire, the Macs may be the first to drop Firewire. It’s gone from the iPods already. I’m afraid we’re seeing the last of Firewire as Apple becomes an all Intel shop (the designers of USB).

I’m not the only one who thinks such.... (excerpted).

I do a lot with Firewire and I believe that there are a lot of good points in the article.  I bought my first mac in Dec 07 and it has FW 4 & 800.  It is so much faster than the USB2.  Firwire is quite a bit more expensive, especially since there aren’t many manufacturers of the FW800 technology.  I do believe Firewire will stick around, especially in the upper end storage market, but will get overrun in pretty much every other peripheral market.  After recently looking at Camcorders, almost all of the digital one’s are USB2; though Firewire can still be found on the DV camcorders.  It is a great technology, but it has lacked a good marketing group from the get-go, as well as some of the initial chips having issues, as well as Microsoft not doing a great job with support.
