Save Your Money. Get Free Software For Your Mac

FreeFor as long as I can remember there has been free software for Mac users. Whether it’s a Microsoft Office wannabe or a simple Dashboard Widget, free software is everywhere.

If you’re a Mac user on a budget you can find big savings on good quality Mac utilities and applications. How long will free software be available for Mac users? Is the trend toward more or less commercial software?

I was browsing through MacUpdate today, looking for Friday Freebie™ bargains and.... (excerpted).

Free is good but spending money is more fun in my opinion.

I have found that most of the time you get what you pay for. Although most free software applications I have downloaded on my Mac works just fine, some applications do not.

Then again try to find anything free for a p.c. Even when you pay for a p.c. program it still won’t work right.

So free Mac software is a good thing.

Checkbook? Plenty of checkbooks for the Mac.

Stocks? Sorry. It doesn’t really matter anymore. All my stocks are worthless now.

So what is the best software to run on the mac to keep up with a stock/mutual fund portfolio and keep a checkbook in?

Oh, how I hate Intuit and Quicken for Mac. Sorry to hear that Microsoft is crapping all over their 18 years of Money customers. What a surprise. Intuit’s been crapping all over Mac customers for years, too. Shoddy, bug-ridden updates, lack of feature parity. Now it looks like Intuit wants us to keep all our financial information online so they can milk us for $10 a month in fees. Both Mac and Windows have plenty of other money management choices. Sure the features are less, but what they’ve got works.

Thanks mac dood. I am running VM Fusion with Windows XP. I would love to totally get away from Windows but Internet explorer seems to be the only one that has the Java plugin or something that Investors.com needs. I am thinking about moving over to Quicken, but I have read so many negative reviews that I don’t know if it will be a good move?

Dude, welcome to the Mac. Bummers about the printer, man. That happens. Some of the more esoteric (i.e. ‘business’) functions of some printers are just forgotten about for Mac users. Don’t worry about Microsoft Money, man. It’s history. Microsoft is closing down Money this month. If you really can’t tear yourself totally away from Windows, you can always use Boot Camp, or VMWare Fusion, or Parallels (the latter two run ‘inside’ Mac OS X, which is waaaay cool). Enjoy!!!

I just migrated to an iMac after 12 years with a PC and I Love it. I can already tell that programs like Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom run a lot different on a Mac. I just wish I could find an solution on getting my HP P1100 printer to work in full duplex mode? It is a feature of the printer that I really like but I can’t seem to find a driver to make it work on the mac. I am also looking for ways to totally get away from Windows but it seems I have no other way to open MS money or use the charting feature of Investors.com. I also have a ton of MS Publisher files I still need access too. I have thought about saving to PDF and maybe editing in Photoshop? Would that work?

I just stumbled on this site and it seems interesting to a Mac newbie like me.

Hi Alexis, thank you for the mention.

Another cool thing about iLovePhotos is its Address Book integration.

Have an iPhone? iLovePhotos integrates with your iPhone contacts:

When you tag people in your photos that you already have listed in your address book, the tag icon is updated to the address book. The next time you sync your iPhone your iPhone contact list will update as well. See how it works in this short YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLmyRlf1AaI
