Encore Review: I like Skype. It has video and audio on the Mac and the same on Windows.
Mac-to-Mac audio and video conferencing, and Mac to Windows, too. Is Skype the future for your telephone and cell phone? Of course it is. And not.
If you don’t know, Skype is software for Macs and Windows PCs that lets you make free calls to anyone else, anywhere in the world.
So long as they’re using Skype on their Mac or PC. That means your Mac acts like a telephone.
SKype also lets Mac and Windows users make calls to normal.... (excerpted).

video calls on an iphone would present one simple problem - camera is on the back and screen is on the front. Maybe a genius can suggest the logistics of making a video call with that hardware constraint?

Having video enabled skype would be the factor that gets me to sign up for an iphone. The idea of a full on Dick Tracy communicator is a draw for more people than I can count. Apple could and should advance this technology.

You’re in luck. Apple has a patent on a screen which also acts as a camera. Regardless, putting a swivel camera in the iphone would be a breeze.
