ToolsA Friday wouldn’t be a Friday without some kind of week-ending nugget, a Mac gem, something to savor while you dine out using the money you saved with these top tools and utilities.

Did I mention that they’re free? Sure, capitalist businesses and governments thrive when money changes hands, but, it’s Friday, and you deserve a Mac break today. Pun intended, courtesy of all the CompUSA folks working at Mickey D’s.

Despite the world’s economic woes I’m here to give you comfort while others around you mourn the loss of.... (excerpted).

Vernon, what you want is PhoneView from ECAMM Tech. Nice little app, but only for iPhone.

I really need to know how to get SMS texts off my phone and onto my Imac. Is there something for that?

The free version of MindNode (mindnode.com) is a pretty niffy application for creative thinking and organization. Great for new product name-generating too. Type in a word or an idea and extend that word or idea with a “branching” thought or idea. It’s sort of what the free-associating comedian Robin Williams would look like if he were a piece of software. Use it to organize your thinking inside and then to organize your world outside!

Why Limewire and not http://www.frostwire.com/? That one is a clone of Limewire, and it’s completely free. “Better” from my point of view (albeit i use only torrents)

What is really remarkable about the list is that all of them are quite useful AND they are free. Every Mac user should have four or five on the list.

Most useful to me are PTH Pasteboard, TweetDeck, and All Bookmarks.

I agree. Skitch should be on the list.

Great list. All worthy additions to any Mac. Now, about the order. That wasn’t a list of bottom to top, or reverse, was it? Just a list, right?

It would be interesting to see how they would stack up in order of usefulness.

I would have chosen Skitch over InstantShot. One is more complicated to use, the other is just handy.

Good list.

Nice list, thanks, but really: InstantShot instead of also free Skitch?? What were you thinking? Certainly Instant shot is a fine tool, agreed, but can you write on, draw on, color over, crop, rotate, rescale, drag-and-drop or upload with one click your screenshot with it? Sure, add InstantShot to your box of grab tools; it’s better than Grab, but you’ll keep Skitch at your fingertips; it gives a whole new meaning to the concept of a screenshot.

Or if you prefer, replace the word “Skitch” with the word “Jing” and you can add “make a movie and post it online” to the “can you?” list above. I don’t prefer; Skitch was first to win my heart and I’m a loyalist, but either free utility shows up InstantShot for the old-school tool it is.
