The Best Mac File Sync Program. A Penny A Day?

Oh, and amortized over a few years it’s not even a penny a day. Or 10-cents a day for less than a year.

I’ve written extensively on the need to backup your Mac files. One of the easiest ways is simply to clone your Mac to an external hard drive. Cloned backups couldn’t get much easier on the Mac. Two clicks, five minutes, you’re done.

File synchronization between Macs and between backup sources is a whole ‘nuther problem altogether. I’ve tried nearly everything from Retrospect to Synchronize Pro! Success has always.... (excerpted).

I’m always amazed when some users cannot get a highly rated application to work and then blame everyone but themselves. Dude, stop dinking around with your Mac. When everyone else loves it and you can’t get it work, the problem isn’t with the app. It’s with you and something you’ve mucked up on your Mac. I’ve had CS running for years on my Macs without one hiccup. It syncs from Mac to external hard drive automagically. It syncs from Mac to Mac across the home network automagically. If you cannot get CS to work then the problem is probably you and something you’ve done to screw up your Mac. Stop blaming others for your inadequacies.

I wish I could second your glowing reports for Chronosync, but I simply cannot. I have been beta-testing v4 for the past few months and it “Simply Doesn’t Work..”  What I want to do should be the simplest of file-sync tasks; keep a few folders on iMac synchronized with my laptop. The problem is that ChronoSync starts a session - and then fails with an error:
“the operation failed because the user does not have the correct access to the file or folder”
What the hell? I can see and use the file fine from my iMac, so why can’t Chronosync access it as well?  And what am I supposed to do resolve that?  Prior to attempting the sync I am presented with:
“The right target volume doesn’t support extended security (ACLs) whereas the left target volume does” - What am I supposed to do with that information? And why doesn’t CS-4 offer some sort of solution for me??  In discussions with the beta manager I am advised to use ChronoAgent (an extra cost add-on) but my needs are VERY basic so why should I need the add-on?

Hardly seems to agree with your experience that “...it just works” !!

That’s wrong. Chronosync charges for each computer you install the software on, which is pretty much the same licensing agreement as every other software vendor. If I want to sync my main Mac with five other Macs I only need one installation of Chronosync on my main Mac.

Chronosync charges for each computer you want to install it on. I think charging the same user for every computer he wants to install it on is stupid. Most people want to sycn because they use different computers. So the actual cost is about 2-3 times what the sellers claim.

your cost analogy is horrible but your review is good. how does this compare to superduper!?

I just purchased Retrospect for $120.00 (June 2008) and realize that the interface and “interactivity” reminds me of mac os interface from 10+ years ago.

I also downloaded the test version of Synchronize! Pro X… and still not happy with the lack of simplicity - although i must say it is much simpler than Retrospect, which reminds me of AutoCad and Quark of few years back.

I am now ready to give ChronoSync a try.. and I really wish that Transmit had created a File Synchronization software that did EXACTLY the same as Transmit does - except between two hard drives, instead of a hard drive vs. FTP server.

Thanks for the post on ChronoSync.

People who are math challenged not withstanding.. (I get it, less than a year for $0.10 per day = less than 365 X $0.10 or $36.50 or a penny a day for a few years ($30.00 / $0.01 per day = 3,000 days or 8.2 years). 8 years is not a few but okay at least I get the math…
