The Latest Back Up Trend: Save Files On The Internet

FilesThere’s a rapidly growing trend when it comes to Mac users and their files. It’s called back up strategy. What’s yours? Need another option?

Many Mac users opt for an extra hard disk or two and use OS X’s Time Machine, or SuperDuper! to keep extra copies of files. Why not store your back up files on the internet, out there in the cloud? It’s cheap to cheaper, not too fast, but another layer of protection.

Sure, we use Time Machine. Sure, we use a cloned hard drive..... (excerpted).

Drop Box is the best back up and sync service so far in my opinion. I use it to sync up my project files between my PowerMac and my Macbook Pro, while being able to access the files over the internet if I’m away from either machine… this is the kind of core functionality .mac/mobileme should have had. 50GB for the paid version is a fair amount that i can work with and hopefully capacity will grow over time. I’m surprised google hasn’t eaten them up already, since it would fit in nicely with their online app strategy.

It is slightly off-topic, but I routinely synchronize my PB HD from home onto my MacPro at work using ChronoSync over the internet.  For all intents and purposes storage is unlimited, it’s free, it’s an off-site back up so it’s safe, and since my MacPro is always on and with a fixed IP address, I can access it from any Mac anywhere if I need it.

Dropbox is another excellent service that is magically integrated right in the Finder. Excellent sync/backup functions and it just works. They’ve even added a simple way to send huge files without requiring the recipient to sign up or download something.

They suck you in with 2 GB free and when prices come down for extra storage, the revenues will start to flow.
