What I Don’t Like About Storing Passwords.

PasswordsEncore Review: Do you have passwords or credit card information stored on Stickies in Mac OS X? Me, too. Well, I did.

Stickies are handy though anything but safe. Once you get too much info and the sticky grows, it’s not even handy anymore. Is there a better solution?

Enter the word “Passwords” into MacUpdate’s search field and you’ll have a page load of Mac applications that handle passwords securely on your Mac.

Which ones are good? Which are not? What criteria should you use for selecting a quality application.... (excerpted).

1-Password does not make your list? I thought 1-password was the way to go. But I have not seen any of these other software programs you have listed either

After much research into various alternatives I chose 1Password to keep track of all of my web passwords as well as information such as credit cards, memberships, etc. that I would normally carry in my wallet.  It’s well integrate into just about every browser available for the Mac and syncs up to both Palm Pilots and iPhones (I’ll be getting the latter when they’re available in Canada later this year smile.  1Password works and it works well.

For keeping track of serial numbers I use a program called License Keeper.  I’m a big fan of this application as well.  One of my favourite features is e-mail integration.  When I register some new software I can use the “Attach Email” feature to import any e-mails that are selected in the Mac OS X Mail program.  It’s even smart enough to extract the serial number.

My two cents smile

You might want to consider Safe Place.  I’m in my 4th year of using it and it works great.  Customizable record types and fields, and the price ($10) and support are great.

Check it out at http://www.mere-mortal-software.com/safeplace/

I use 1Password. It has a plug-in for all the popular browsers so you can use it right from the toolbar or a handy right-click. It will automatically add passwords for new sites, after asking, of course. And it uses the Mac keychain, so it can be synced across multiple macs using .Mac syncing. I have the 1Password keychain set up with a different, secure password and it automatically re-locks every hour for security. It does notes - great for credit card numbers - but I think there are better apps out there for collecting and storing serial numbers. It even has a Palm reader, though it is rudimentary, it’s functional. They recently added the ability to store your passwords (encrypted and password protected to be sure) on their server so you can get at them from any computer, Mac or PC, from anywhere on the Net. I haven’t used this feature, but it could be great for those who use several Macs or a mix of Mac and PCs on a regular basis.
