It had to happen. History repeats itself. The iPod with video becomes another standard for online, portable pornography. From glossy print, to VHS, to DVD, to MPEGs, Porn looks for a standard platform of distribution.
The newest? iPod’s new video format. Pornography outlets are quick to adapt new technology that’s not just in the forefront, but set to become a standard.
The new iPod with video is about to become the newest standard for portable pornographic distribution. Here’s why. And how.
VHS won the video recorder and video tape wars a few decades ago because of pornography.
For awhile, hard core films were available on both formats. As the public began to lean toward VHS recorders, the porn industry led the way and dumped Sony’s Betamax format.
The pornography industry was quick to adapt to the higher quality and lower production costs of DVDs. And quick to produce videos in MPEG format for distribution online.
Apple’s announcement of the new iPod with video had to be music to the ears of the porn industry. A new format that will quickly become an ubiquitous standard, a new means of distribution, and a new portable player that will sell in the tens of millions.
What’s happening a month or so after the iPod with video hit the streets? Portable porn. iPod porn. iPod video dating services. More to come. So to speak.
I’m not the only one with a crystal ball. So to speak. TV Predictions says the switch by porn operators to the iPod’s new video format has already begun.
TV Predictions cites the popular Suicide Girls web site as an example. The site offers free downloads of interviews with their models.
There’s also the popular and brash site, povPod, which gets down and dirty using their obviously ‘POV’ (point of view) approach to video, and brings it to a, uh, um, personal level.
You can pay per video downloaded or subscribe. povPod is rather blatant and and suggests that the downloads will play in iTunes 6 as a video.
Not to be outdone in the scubscription model isGuba, the online search engine that pulls video from UseNet news groups. Coming soon for iPod users will be thousands of adult films for a mere $14.95 a month.
Keeping one step away from Apple’s legal eagles and use of the ‘iPod’ name for prurient purposes is the brand new PodDater, one of the first online dating services to provide iPod compatible videos for dates.
Carol said it was OK to check out the site, you know, for research requirements. Looks like there are a few dozen geeky looking young men, and one well endowed female who appears to be, uh, professional.
Demographics probably skew heavily toward the male side of the gender platform.
Is the iPod with video merely a viewing device for pornography? Of course not. Enterprising technologists have also come up with a way to make your new iPod do double duty as a ‘pleasure device.’
That’s right. LoveHoney in the UK is taking orders for “A super-fun sex toy that plugs into your iPod! The music-activated vibrating bullet stimulates you in time with your favourite music.”
Finally, an iPod accessory you probably won’t find in an Apple Store.
It’s doubtful that Apple will provide a XXX section of the iTunes Music Store devoted to pornography, though the company isn’t going to do much to prevent the spread of pornographic videos.
Why? It can’t. The standard is being cast and the pornographic industry knows it and is moving in that direction. Fast.
How fast? The Washington Post says Apple took a full 20 days to reach 1-million downloads of videos from the iTunes Music Store.
The SuicideGirls web site, with free videos of nude or scantily clad models, hit the same mark in a week.
The iPod with video has an attractive 320×240 pixel image that scales well on a Mac or PC. Users won’t even need an iPod to get their latest heroes and heroines of the industry.
Finding iPod, iTunes, Mac and PC compatible portable porn won’t be any more difficult than finding normal pornography on the net. Within a few months, more and more sites will appear; current sites will make the adjustment in their video archives.
The iPod with video, and the new 320×240 format, is the new standard for music video playback. And porn.

I don’t know where to begin. I hate to see it happen so quickly but it’s so obvious what is taking place.

Jack, what research? I don’t remember talking about any web site research regarding online dating services. We need to talk.

I’m too young to know of such things. Does this article mean that I have to wear sunglasses when I read the site?

This ongoing event should not come as a surprise to anyone. Sex sells. Sex helps to sell itself, too, and merely needs another outlet. We don’t think of our Macs as being viewing devices for pornography but that would be denying reality. It’s here to stay.
