I’m a 21st century knowledge worker. A Mac user by day and by night. My finger tips have Mac keyboard letters where fingerprints used to be.
The Mac-laden school where I work is my home. I love working on Macs. Unfortunately, I work on Windows PCs, too, so I have a certain amount of stress each day which can only be relieved through concentrated doses of peace, serenity, harmony and a oneness with my Mac.
The Machine Of Peace And Serenity
Compared to what the typical Windows PC user goes through each day, our lives as Mac users are mundane. No virus or spyware scans to worry about. No blue screens of death from the evil empire.
How can Mac users have stress that needs relief?
It’s not so much our Macs as it is what goes on inside our Macs and comes across our Mac screens. Email. Web pages. iChat. Instant messaging. Facebook walls. Twitter tweets.
That’s not to mention all the apps we use and maintain. From iCal to Address Book to MobileMe to back ups to iWork to Office to Adobe’s Annual Tax, there’s always something crossing our screens that taxes us more.
How can you make your Mac the machine of peace and serenity? Change your mood.
Digital Moods Of Peace And Serenity
One of my all time favorite Mac apps, the one that runs almost as much as Mail or Safari or any other app, is SonicMood. This is not your mother’s wind chimes.
SonicMood bills itself as mood chimes—a variety of sounds and chimes which are gentle and soothing and reside in the background of your Mac. The collection of harmonious sounds are not like playing a CD of sounds over and over.
SonicMood’s control panel is akin to iTunes except the mood sounds and varieties are infinite (try that with Golden Oldies albums from the iTunes Store).
You may select a particular mood with sounds and instruments, but you can mix and match to match your own taste and moods.
Set the schedule for each mood to play when you want it to play; even add instruments and sounds to each to give it a totally customized, totally personalized mood. This allows you to continue to work on your Mac while SonicMood plays in the background.
Every aspect of the sounds and instruments which make up each mood is under your control. Choose the instruments, vary the timing and notes, change the scale or key, even control the stereo effects. Create your own moods with up to 32 different sound files.
Wait. There’s more. SonicMood has a built-in recorder which can take your custom mood compositions (or any SonicMood mood) and export the sound as a MIDI file (great in Garageband) or a number of file formats perfect for iTunes.
That means that SonicMood can travel with you on your iPod, iPad, iPhone. Wait. There’s more. SonicMood knows that Mac users are a creative group, so the built in keyboard allows you to play along with your SonicMood creation and create a totally, completely, absolutely personalized mood.
Sounds are one way to soothe the savage soul, of course, but, as everyone knows, a picture is worth a thousand words, made even better by accompanying mood music. SonicMood’s Picture Window displays photos from iPhoto (or any image you desire) as part of a peace and serenity slide show.
Wait. There’s still more.
Wind chimes make up a soothing component of SonicMood’s creations. so why not have an onscreen wind chime which move (digitally, not using the wind)? Got it. Done.
Here’s what makes SonicMood so special. It is drop dead simple to set up and use. Moods and sounds and instruments are simple double clicks to invoke, so it’s completely usable from the first double click after installation.
However, if you love getting your geek on, the SonicMood controls give you more control over peace and serenity than you ever imagine this side of winning a $100-million lottery. There’s just nothing not to like.
