There was a day, back in the day, when a Mac could print Finder folder windows. You’d get a nice, printed list of all the files and folders inside a folder. Try that in Mac OS X.
Sorry. It’s a no go. Printing Finder folder windows is not a 21st century function for Mac users. But what if you really, really need to print out a list of what’s inside a folder on your Mac? Screen capture? Ugly. There is a better way.
Printing Finder Folder Windows
Mac OS X has been around 10 years already. That’s 120 months without the ability to print Finder folder windows and contents. I’m sure Apple has a good reason for dumping the feature.
If someone knows what it is, please tell us.
Otherwise, Mac app developers to the rescue.
Print Window to the rescue. The problem is simple. So is the solution. You want to print a list of the files and folders inside a particular Finder folder. That’s what Print Window does.
From within the Mac’s Finder, select a folder that contains files or folders for which you want a printed listing.
Simply open Print Window, select Print Folder Listing from the menu, find the folder you want to print, and you’ll get the window above with additional options. That’s it. Almost.
Print Window comes with a few extra features that make it more useful.
Print from the contextual menu, keyboard shortcut, or the Dock menu.
Change the style of what you want printed, expand folders inside folders, change the number of columns to be displayed, even change the number of fields displayed and how they’re sorted.
Headers and icon sizes can be modified, too. Print Window is smart enough to even print a CD Cover which displays the contents of the CD—all your Mac’s backed-up folders, nicely printed.
Caveats? A few. Print Window is free, but not all the features are available in the free version. Print Window Advanced comes with all the features you’ll likely want initially (for example, a CD cover list, thumbnails style, and meta data are included in the Advanced version). Fortunately, the Advanced version runs for the first 30 days so you can try it out thoroughly.
