Have you ever used Wikipedia? Think of it as the world’s free encyclopedia of everything in every language edited by anyone at any time. Wikipedia is a huge database of easily updated information.
Truly, it’s a digital encyclopedia editable by the masses. My using MediaWiki, the Wikipedia engine, you, your company or organization, can have your very own local or networked Wikipedia. Free.
Create Your Own Mac Encyclopedia
MediaWiki is the app you use to create your own company or organizational wiki—a digital, interactive, hyper-linked, encyclopedia. A wiki is a web site that lets users create and edit content using a browser.
It works just like Wikipedia because it’s using the same wiki software. MediaWiki is free.
Wikis are usually collaborative web sites and perfect for a community of users to add, edit, tweak information—general or specific to the community (organization or company).
MediaWiki is powerful, scales to many users, and is easy to use and maintain. There is this one little problem.
Setting Up MediaWiki As Your Wiki
If you’re experienced setting up and using dynamic web sites using the Apacheweb server, MySQL database, and the PHP scripting language on a computer (the same tools used to power Mac360), MediaWiki can be up and running in a few minutes.
If you’ve never heard of Apache, MySQL or PHP, it’s still relatively easy to set up MediaWiki on your Mac using MAMP—a free app that creates a personal web server on your Mac with fully configured and ready-to-go versions of Apache, MySQL, and PHP. MAMP.
Mac. Apache. MySQL. PHP.
Once you’ve downloaded MediaWiki, you’ll need to unzip the files and drag them to the MAMP folder in your Mac’s Applications folder. Drop the MediaWiki folder into MAMP’s htdocs folder.
MAMP’s instructions will show you how to create a database for MediaWiki in MySQL (easy). After that, point your browser to MAMP recommended URL and the MediaWiki installation instructions will appear on screen.
That gives you MediaWiki on your Mac. Follow the instructions to set up users, add and edit content. How can you share MediaWiki—your company or organization’s personal Wikipedia—with others on your network or the internet?
MediaWiki easily installs on most remote web site hosts (most already have Apache, MySQL and PHP configured). Some hosts even automate the installation. Check out Wikipedia to see what MediaWiki can do. MAMP is a good way for Mac users to get started, but is more complex than simply running a Mac app like Safari or Mail.
