All text is not created equal. Text from Microsoft Word can be dirty. Dirty? That means it may have crufty pieces of embedded formatting code which often gets transferred to other word processors or documents.
In fact, dirty text is common. Copy and paste is a big culprit. So are all those invisible characters, extra line returns, tabs, even email forwarding arrows. How do you clean them up?
Digital Soap To The Rescue
You see the problems when formatting documents, when copying and pasting text from one document or word processor to another. Odd little characters show up that shouldn’t be there.
How do you get clean, pure, unformatted text on a Mac?
TextSoap is s digital soap app that I’ve used for years to clean up those crazy and seemingly impossible to find little text messes.
Email messages may be the most obvious offender with those embedded forwarding marks, broken lines of text, and other garbage. TextSoap scrubs them clean so when you copy and paste the text elsewhere it stays clean and pretty.
What About Formatting?
The second most obvious and irritating text issue has to do with formatting. What’s bold or italics in one document might completely disappear when you copy and paste to another document which uses a different app.
TextSoap can clean up the dirty text and keep the formatting intact.
It starts with over 100 built-in cleaners that handle most cleaning situations.
TextSoap can clean text within your app (Apple Mail, Mac OS X’s TextEdit, Apple’s Pages, Microsoft Word, BBEdit, Coda and many others), or you can copy and paste into the built-in editor.
The built-in cleaner is called Scrub. Great name, right? It handles common cleaning tasks that remove extra space, delete the email forwarding marks, and fixes broken paragraphs. That will take care of most of your cleaning needs.
What if the text is really, really dirty? TextSoap lets you create custom collections of cleaners into Groups. Add a cleaner, stack it with other cleaners, and it scrubs deep down to remove or reformat incredibly dirty, messy text.
Pictures Worth Thousands Of Words
Admittedly, describing dirty text is different than showing what dirty text looks like, and how TextSoap cleans it. Fortunately, TextSoap provides a bunch of screenshots so you can see it in action with instructive detail (click the image for a larger, pop up version).
If you’ve ever had text in a document that was garbled with crazy characters, odd formatting symbols, or just plain messy, TextSoap is the Mac app that cleans the mess.
Most cleaning episodes require nothing more than a click or two using the built-in cleaners which Scrub the text. Preview mode lets you see what happens. Other scrubbing can get a little tricky when using the Custom Cleaner Editor to create a customized solution. You’re required to think through the cleaning process. Fortunately, TextSoap lets you save the cleaning configuration to be used again.
