Sending and sharing files on a Mac is easy, right? Email. That gets most files where they need to go. Except email isn’t secure and doesn’t handle very large files.
Businesses and organizations prefer a more formal, trackable, automated method to deliver larger, more important files from here to there. Fortunately, Mac users have apps that send and share files across local networks and the internet.
Stand And Deliver
What Deliver does is automate delivery of files remotely and locally.
It has built-in email notifications, file size compression, and security encryption.
Files can be transferred from one location to many users via FTP, SFTP, MobileMe, Amazon S3, WebDAV, AFP, SMB, email, and sneaker net. Pretty good, huh?
Since my day job has me managing a few hundred state workers’ Macs and PCs I’m always on the lookout for new way to deliver files easily and securely. Deliver seemed to lack one simple function.
Drop Dead Easy Delivery
My latest friend is Deliver Express, which I’m trying out now. It’s an add-on function to Deliver which automates the initial step of the delivery process using a Hot Folder.
What’s great about Deliver Express for organizations is the unattended nature of using a so-called hot folder. Just save or drag and drop a specific file to a specific folder and it automatically gets delivered.
In most deliver apps, users have to fill in forms, check off click boxes, select destinations, even add a message.
Deliver Express’ hot folder just delivers the goods using Deliver’s pre-installed set up.
Drop the file on the network hot folder and it’s done. Email notifications are handled automatically, including the link to retrieve the dropped file.
I like this. And I can see usage expanding because it’s perfect for all kinds of file delivery. Sensitive documents, encrypted files, financial information, graphic files, photographs, large files and so on.
Everything gets dropped and delivered from Macs and PCs to Macs or PCs and Deliver keeps a history of the deliveries. The only real issue is the setup. To use Deliver Express’ hot folder technology, you still have to set up Deliver, manage users, configure destination and delivery methods.
For many organizations that’s a small effort to ensure quick and painless and secure delivery of files.
