Winter in Atlanta used to be pleasant. Winter golf has been replaced by sledding, snowmen in the yard, and shoveling snow from the driveway.
Whenever my mind wanders a bit, I mouse over to one of my favorite, and few, Dashboard Widgets and take a look at what the rest of the world looks like. Within a few clicks I’m planning a vacation or feeling better.
Webcams Of The World With No Click
My Mac is not cluttered with Dashboard Widgets but I confess to a somewhat voyeuristic desire to see what’s going on in the rest of the world, so I have a list of webcams for one of my favorite Widgets.
To be honest, I’m not certain there is a college class on naming Widgets.
What I am certain about is that Jackson Myers wasn’t there.
SlothCam is a popular Dashboard Widget that does a great job of capturing webcams from all over the world and bringing webcam images right to your Mac. Jackson Myers is the guy who developed SlothCam so he’s responsible for a loss in productivity experienced by many Mac users the world over.
Maybe that’s where the sloth in SlothCam came from.
Recycled Webcam Images
SlothCam’s interface is straightforward and comes with a few webcam URL’s already built in. Atlanta is one of many. Setup is self explanatory.
Grab a webcam location from the dropdown menu, set the refresh rate and you’re ready to view.
Adding your own webcam is as easy. Give the location a name, add the URL, and click the Plus sign to save.
Image quality is totally dependent on the webcam of choice. Some are better than others.
Options include viewing the caption, deleting a saved webcam, auto cycling through your list of webcams, and resetting preferences (start over).
SlothCam is something of an addiction. My list of world wide webcam locations is extensive and I check them daily. Why?
Atlanta has great weather, but seems to border on the extreme.
A webcam view from other locations, presumably images only minutes old, lets me know that it’s worse out there, or better out there, depending on my mood at the moment (not to mention local weather conditions).
SlothCam also has an iPhone version, which is handy for wasting time while you’re on the go.
