My wife and I are visiting with my in-laws who are new to the Mac. Their idea of what’s what on a computer comes from many years of wrestling with Windows PCs.
They love the Mac but spend too much time trying to make it work like a PC. This weekend we devoted half a day to trying out various Mac Desktop photo apps. It’s a strange new world, even for Mac veterans.
Customize Your Mac Desktop
Don’t ask me why Mac users customize their Desktop pictures. Most of the Desktop, most of the time, is covered by various windows from open apps. It’s not like you can see anything, right?
One inexpensive app that caught my in-laws eye, and too much of our time, is called Laundry.
I assume that by the name Laundry, Laundry provides a fresh and clean and different Desktop photo from time to time.
It does. Laundry works behind the scenes to grab appropriate (and, sometimes, inappropriate) photos from various online sources and makes them, for awhile, the Desktop picture.
It starts off by pulling down some of the Most Interesting images from Flickr. But it doesn’t stop there.
Laundry’s Preferences give you options to search and retrieve images from other sources, such as Reddit, so your Desktop picture remains, well, fresh and clean.
Preferences also give you options to change the Desktop background image every so many minutes.
Another option ensures that the image will be a size that matches your Mac’s screen resolution. You can also have Laundry play a sound when it changes the background image.
I assume that particular option is there so you’ll stop whatever you’re doing and take a look to see what’s fresh in the Laundry.
And, of course, there’s an option to change the Desktop background image manually, bypassing the automated time lapse, just in case you get really bored with what you can’t see behind all the app windows on your Mac.
Laundry works well but suffers from a lack of variety. It would be great if you could get images from National Geographic, Animal Planet, the Discover Channel, Victoria’s Secret, or the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition (back editions included).
