Just when you thought it was safe to use email again (spammers are on the decline), comes yet another Mac app that makes it easy to send email to the masses.
There are two kinds of email. Messages you want. Messages you don’t want. If you sign up for something and use your email address, then someone is managing those messages using an app like SerialMailer.
Spam Disguised As Email Newsletters?
My Mac Mail inbox fills up with unwanted email on a ratio of about five or 10 to 1. That’s one message I want. Five to 10 that I don’t want. That means that some email is legitimate, expected, wanted, and, occasionally useful.
How does that happen? Apps like SerialMailer, which is disguised as a personalized email newsletter app.
One man’s spam machine is another man’s crank-it-out newsletter machine. Either way, SerialMailer is one of about a dozen Mac apps that manage mass email for the masses.
Unlike Apple’s built-in Mac Mail, SerialMailer takes a three pronged approach to creating
spam newsletters from companies, organizations, very large families.
Database Manager – Step #1 is managing the email addresses and corresponding names and information in a database. The app imports information from Address Book, spreadsheets, database documents, or other files.
From there, you define the fields and columns that will get used in the
spam message email newsletter.
Message Editor – Step #2 is using the Message Editor to create your
spam newsletter or message. This is easy to use. Create a template, drop in the corresponding name, email address, and other information. You get your choice of plain text email, rich text email, even HTML messages.
The editor is smart enough to send specific attachments to specific people on your email list.
Send Methods – Step #3 is what you do when you’re ready to send. Standard SMTP email can be setup for your outgoing account, or use Apple’s Mail on your Mac. There’s also a handy built-in email server.
SerialMailer can throttle the outgoing messages so your email host or ISP won’t get worried you’ve become a local spam machine. Unless that’s what you’re really doing, then their fears are justified.
You can test the database list of email addresses with simulated sending. Templates can be saved and reused for other mass email opportunities. SerialMailer is better that some of the less expensive mass email apps in that you can manage recipients in a database.
What’s missing? There’s no easy way to handle email that bounces back, so make sure your list is up to date. It’s not available on the Mac App Store (yet), but there is a try-before-you-buy option.
