They’re folders. Manila folders. Colorless folders. Hard-to-tell-apart folders. What can you do to make your Mac’s folders come alive? Go crazy or do something cheap and sane. Those are my choices.
Add Pzaz To A Mac’s Folders
All the folders on your Mac look the same, but each folder is different. Some contain valuable files and other folders.
Some folders contain less valuable files and folders and the only way you can tell the difference is by the name you give each folder.
Or, you could get creative and add a colorful label to the folder. It doesn’t change label color or icon. It only changes the label color. From colorless to colorful-but-less.
Big whoop, right? If you’re a somewhat geeky Mac user, you could create or grab an icon you like and figure out how to turn the folder’s icon into something less than boring.
Or, you could spend some bucks on CandyBar, and give your Mac a totally unique look from top to bottom (which, of course, looks only like all the other CandyBar app user’s Macs).
Or, you could pay a lot less money on Iconator and get a lot less functionality, but you’d have custom icons for your Mac’s folders. It doesn’t get easier, folks.
Drag a folder onto Iconator, select an icon from the list, click the Apply button, and repeat until all those boring Mac icons look just like iPhone icons.
That’s the rub. iPhone-like icons. Yes, that’s thinking different, for sure (click on the image above for a larger, pop up version).
Your Mac’s folders now look like icons from the iPhone or iPad. But they’re not boring. And they’re no longer Mac OS X folders. Except they’re still folders. They hold other folders and files. Nothing has changed except the icon.
That’s it. You can’t expect more from an app that only does what it says it will do. Change your Mac’s folder icons to something else.
Iconator cannot be simpler to use. The only negative at all is that the icon selection is so, well, boring. And that’s the reason for changing the icons in the first place.
To be fair, the new boring, as opposed to the old boring, is more colorful, and perhaps– if you find the right icon– more visually appealing, more easily identifiable as to contents. That’s worth a few stars and a little bit of coin.
