The school where I work has a few hundred Macs and many more Windows PCs. We also have dozens of teachers, many hundreds of students, and two computer administrators.
One request we get regularly from teachers is for apps that transcribe. Transcribe music. Transcribe speech. My job is to evaluate teacher requests. Here’s a transcribing app for both Mac and PC.
Transcribe Me, Baby, One More Time
From my perspective as Mac and PC administrator, transcribing anything requires diligence, a learning curve, and persistence. Office assistants have specialized transcribing equipment and training to match.
The rest of us have to dig through apps to find one that’s both usable and stable.
Transcribe! is on my Mac today because it’s affordable, transcribes both music and speech, and works on both Mac and Windows PCs.
At first, it appears as if Transcribe is aimed at music transcription, but it doesn’t actually transcribe in the traditional sense.
It’s more of a play along app so you can learn music and instruments.
It changes pitch and speed and stores loops of audio. There’s built-in support for some foot pedals. Transcribe! handles audio and video files, but not MIDI files.
For music students, Transcribe! makes it easier to hear specific notes and chords. For both speech and music, you can add markers and text notations.
There’s also a built-in, on screen piano keyboard for quick reference notes (not altogether useful for speech transcriptions). Transcribe can slow down audio without changing pitch, but the true value for musicians seems to be in placing markers along the scrollable waveform (but it’s not an audio editor).
Keyboard shortcuts make Transcribe! more efficient for power users. It will also record audio through your Mac or PC. It even guesses notes and chords. Tools include Tuning for playback pitch adjustment, an Equalizer, and a variable Speed control.
Perfect for students and teachers is the 30-day trial and tutorial video. Transcribe! is powerful, but not a true music transcriber, but more of a tool to learn.
