I don’t really know. My oldest timing device is a wind up clock that my grandmother had from the last century. Or, maybe the one before that. It works. But it needs to be wound up. My Mac has a dozen or so apps that tell what time it is somewhere else. Ditto for a few screen savers with giant screen clocks. What time is it somewhere else?
That requires a Mac app like Universal Time.
What Time Is It Somewhere Else?
The problem with figuring out the time somewhere else is that not everyone plays by the same rules. If you don’t believe me, check out Daylight Saving Time Explained.
It’s a video which highlights where it came from and why it’s more confusing than you think.
It’s not pretty. It’s messy. Most of us know what time it is where we are, and usually, with some degree of accuracy, one or two time zones left and right of ours.
After that, it gets messy. What time is it in Venezuela? Amazingly, those folks are farther east than the Easy Coast of the US.
See the problem? Without a map of time zones, it’s not easy to figure out exactly what time it is elsewhere unless you have Universal Time.
This is my favorite Mac time app for Autumn 2011. Mix and match a little local weather with a clock and a location, and this is a fun app to view.
Almost any location in the world has time (not all are hourly) which can be set up in Universal Time, and more than one city can be displayed.
There’s also current city weather conditions available for each city, including a four-day forecast pop up window.
The clocks are even color coded.
White clocks indicate day time hours, which means that if you need to call, it’s likely that someone on the other side is awake.
Black clock faces indicate night time hours in the city you’ve selected.
Universal Time keeps track of time zones and daylight saving time (as far as possible; see the video above as daylight saving time doesn’t exist everywhere you think it does).
There’s even a built in alarm with settings for specific dates and times. Multiple alarms are also supported.
Universal Time also different graphic images for the clock faces– from a standard analog type clock with hour, minute, and second hands, to modern digital clocks.
If time is important to you and you need a simple, one-click, one view look at what time it is somewhere else, you won’t find a better deal for the price of a cup of coffee (mid-range; not Starbucks).
