The crazy world of video file formats isn’t getting any better. It’s getting worse. I don’t know the exact number of video formats in use, but I’m out of fingers and toes.
Most Mac video apps have rudimentary conversion options in Save As… Those work for the basics, but what users want and need is a Mac-like app that does the dirty work of converting, behind the scenes so we don’t have to mess with configurations, or even have to think about what’s going on. Oh, if only there were a Mac app that converted video files the old fashioned way. Drop. Dead. Easy.
Well, boys and girls, guys and gals, there is a Mac-like Mac app that does all that nasty converting using old fashioned technique of drag and drop.
Make It Easy, Make It Painless
Among the many apps on my Mac that convert this to that and back again, is Permute. This is the simple to use Mac app that, well, converts.
How easy is it to convert from whatever video clip you have to something you can use on your iPhone or iPad or web site?
Drag. And. Drop. Then select where you want the video to go from the drop down menu selector.
For example, if your video needs to run on the iPod or iPhone or iPad or AppleTV or be converted to MP4 or the crazy DivX format, just select, and Permute does the work.
It’s a 64-bit app so it screams through the conversion process on new Macs like scrolling through warm butter. There’s not much to configure, either, which is both good and bad.
The good is that Permute makes it easy to convert video to run on nearly any device you have (unless it’s steam operated).
The bad news is that configuration is minimal. The presets make it easy to convert a video for Apple iDevices, eve xBox.
And, it will convert DVD VIDEO_TS folders to IOS files so you can store DVDs (but you’ll need to rip the DVD first; Permute doesn’t do that).
Presets can be modified, but make sure to get your officially sanctioned Geek Hat on first.
Video conversion settings are not for the faint of heart or inexperienced Mac user. That’s why Permute exists in the first place. It does all the work for you. Even though it’s a Mac App Store app (easy purchase, easy downloads, easy updates), there’s also a trial version from the developer.
