What this world needs, besides a good 5-cent cigar or a chicken in every pot, is a way to improve typing– faster and more accurate. Fortunately, there’s a Mac app for that. What it does is nothing short of miraculous for the slow finger crowd, but it also improves the typing speed of those of us born with a silver keyboard in hand.
The Built-in Abbreviation Expander App
Whether you type as if you’re a Pinball Wizard with 14 fingers, or Quasimodo who does the hunt-and-peck two fingered two step, this is the app for you.
DashExpander is a text abbreviation expander. That’s a complicated way of saying it finishes typing what you start.
Think snippets. Think shortcuts. Think abbreviations. Think of what happens when you press certain keys and your Mac types for you.
Here’s how it works. Create a bunch of text snippets that you can use again and again. DashExpander reads what you’re typing and is ready to suggest a snippet in real time, as you type.
It looks like this.
The abbreviations are expanded as you type. The search and insert process is nearly instant.
If you need hints, the Menubar app is just a keyboard shortcut from popping up on the screen.
You can also use your Mac’s built-in Multi-touch gestures, even set up placeholders which you can edit and place into documents.
By sticking to frequently used snippets of text in your typing, you’ll increase speed and accuracy.
DashExpander’s claim to fame is your text snippet library.
As you increase the snippets in the library, your typing speeds up because the app does the typing for you.
Since many of us have multiple Macs, your entire snippet collection can be used on other Macs and synchronized by Dropbox.
DashExpander lets you create snippet placeholders which, when you drop them into a document, automatically expand the text. For example, @clipboard automatically expands whatever is in the Mac’s clipboard.
@date expands into the current date, and @time expands into the current time. And it does all this at the lowest price ever. At least, until they figure out how cool it is, how it helps you type faster and more accurately, and they add a price tag to it.
