The Desktop is pristine, well organized, with files where they’re supposed to be. Except when they’re not. When I’m busy working on my Mac all hell breaks loose on the Desktop. It’s just like a real desk. Messy. How do you clean a real desktop? Open the top drawer and dump everything inside. Bingo. Clean.
And guess what? There’s a Mac app that does the same think to your Desktop.
Folder Tidy To The Rescue
I’ve been known to clean my desk at home by using a broom and an empty copier paper box. Swoosh. Just push everything into the box, and, Voila! Clean desk.
How many of us have similarly disorganized Desktops on our Macs?
When we’re busy we store files, documents, apps, photos, whatevers right on the Mac’s Desktop.
It doesn’t take long for the Desktop to resemble a landfill. The only things missing are a bulldozer and bacteria.
Folder Tidy is a handy Mac app that simply cleans up messy folders full of files and stuff. After all, the Desktop itself is nothing more than a folder on your Mac.
What you want is a way to take all those files, whether they’re in a folder or on the Desktop, and automagically put them into the correct folders elsewhere on your Mac.
The problem is that doing it manually is tedious and time consuming. Folder Tidy makes it easy and it’s cool to watch, too.
That’s how it works. It grabs every file in a folder (or, from the Mac’s Desktop), and moves the files where they’re supposed to go. Documents go to specific folders in the Documents folder.
Movie clips go to movies. Photos go to Pictures. Or, wherever you want them to.
How does all this work? Rules. You give Folder Tidy the rules, and it knows which files go where.
Folder Tidy is about choices and setup.
First, you choose which types of files that Folder Tidy can clean up.
Then, using the preset Tidy rules, choose which files and folders to ignore during a cleanup. And, of course, you tell Folder Tidy where to put the cleaned up files and folders.
There are options which are useful, too. Folder Tidy can ignore aliases, certain folders, or any file or folder with a label.
Finally, click and Folder Tidy grabs everything in the folder (you decide the folder), and moves it where each items is supposed to go.
There’s even a cool animation effect and you can watch the files being moved. All the icons go flying off to their assigned resting place. What if you make a mistake? Undo is your friend and Folder Tidy has a built-in undo.
The preset rules are obvious. And you can stack the custom rules, one on top of the other. I love this app. Every now and again it forgets to move a file, but that’s the exception rather than the rule.
For automatic cleaning, Folder Tidy is dirt cheap. It’s worth a few bucks just to watch the file icons move off the Desktop.
