Come on, Apple! Spruce it up a little. Kill the embossed look and add some color, for crying out loud.
Since Apple isn’t up to the task of personalizing the most personal of personal computers, app hounds like me have to come to the rescue. How many ways can you enhance, customize, improve folders on your Mac?
Customize Your Mac’s Folders
As it turns out, customizing a Mac’s folders is remarkably easy. And cheap. Once you try the free way to customize a folder, you’ll hate it.
But once you’ve tried an app that creates the coolest covers this side of George Clooney’s bedroom, you’ll be hooked forever.
First on my list is Colored Folder Creator. Guess what it does? Go ahead. Guess? It creates color folders.
Use the app to create simple colored folders or drop in patterns or images for a completely unique look. Take a look at some samples.
See what happens when you’re left unattended? Crazy, gaudy, outrageous folder designs that seem to be born pregnant and immediately give birth to dozens of other awful looking folder designs.
A little more subtle and understated are the designs in the Folders Factory.
This one comes with a simple set of tools to create custom folders. Drop in an image or photo. Add a texture or text to the photo and control each element from the tool palette.
Creating customized folders is actually fun. Also fun and even easier and cheaper is Telling Folders. It’s a drag and drop operation. Drag an image onto Telling Folders and it transfers the folder icon.
IconChanger adds a twist to your Mac personalization efforts. It lets you change the icons in folders, yes, but also change icons in files by grabbing icons from other apps or files. For 99-cents it would be nice if there were instructions in English.
The ultimate in Mac icon customization comes from the app CandyBar. It’s so good you can change all the basic icons on your Mac with a click or two.
Here’s the problem with all these folder and icon customization efforts. At first, it’s fun. Instead of boring blue and an embossed folder icon, you can go crazy creative with a few clicks.
Then, gaudy sets in and you start creating folders and icons that only a mother would love (but wouldn’t tell the neighbors). Still, it’s a cheap and easy way to build customized icons and folders and the going crazy part is built-in to the price.
