With faceless Google, I’m the product. With Apple I’m the customer, and Mac, iPhone, or iPad, the company treats me like the valued customer I want to be.
Here’s the problem. You and I both are being targeted by other retailers who recognize the value in being part of the Apple demograhpic. That’s bad news.
Fewer Cheap Deals For You!
The latest penalty for being a Mac user comes from online travel giant Orbitz. If you use a Mac to check on hotels using Orbitz you won’t get the same deals as Windows PC users.
What? Isn’t that discrimination? Yep. Pure discrimination, Amazon style.
You see, Orbitz acknowledges that Apple Mac users are discriminating shoppers, so Orbitz gives us more expensive options to choose from.
Because Mac users spend more per night on hotels than Windows PC users, Orbitz is merely obliging our discriminating tastes by eliminating the cheaper hotels where the PC riffraff stay.
Orbitz also found that the average household income for Mac users is substantially higher than for Windows PC users.
Why is this a bad thing for us? Doesn’t Amazon do the same kind of thing, where they display ads and products based upon our previous searches and purchases? Yes.
These astute retailers have found a way where they can take advantage of our predisposition for quality, and offer products and services which supposedly satisfy our discriminating tastes while filling their pockets with more loot than a Windows PC user would.
Like it or don’t, as Mac users, we’re a card carrying member of the Apple elite, and that puts a target on our backs. Retailers are gunning for us, aiming to empty our pockets, inflate our credit card balances, all in an effort to enrich their own coffers of loot with our former money.
Oh, the humanity!
I understand why retailers want my money. I understand why they may tempt me with offers or products more suited to my tastes, background, and socioeconomic status as a superior creature, but I still want the opportunity to decide whether to sleep at Motel 6 or a Marriott (cheaper motels usually have free Wi-Fi).
