Besides fighting crime as Chicago’s late night heroine with a cape (cape, mask, boots– a girl can dream, right), my day job consists of a career managing and administrating a few hundred Macs and PCs in one of Chicagoland’s finest private schools.
Taking care of that many computers with an even larger number of teachers and students can be a challenge. Everyone wants to customize and personalize their computer. Macs don’t have many customization options, but some are free to nearly free.
Change Your Desktop Wallpaper
Besides screensavers and customizing which app icons go where in the Dock, there’s not much in the way of easy customization or personalization of the Mac these days.
The lone exception is the Desktop wallpaper (officially described as Desktop pictures by Apple) for which images and photos and designs abound.
One that you’ll like is Lumio Wallpapers which offers a large variety and number of both original and exclusive Desktop wallpaper images for the Mac.
There’s not much to the app itself, which reflects the price tag– about 2-cents for each image. Open it up, click through the 250 or so images, select one you like, and– click. It’s installed and transforms your Mac’s Desktop instantly (which, ostensibly boosts your mood, improves your productivity, and increases serotonin levels– or not).
Here’s what you get. What could be easier to use?
Desktop wallpapers or pictures are more about taste than convenience.
After all, how much of the Mac’s Desktop do we get to see anyway? It’s covered up by a dozen Mac apps, each with one or more windows. Personalization just isn’t what it used to be.
Lumio Wallpapers doesn’t feature much functionality beyond simply setting the Desktop wallpaper image.
There’s no control to change the image regularly. There’s no control to search for additional Desktop wallpaper images online.
There’s no control to use the Desktop image as a screensaver (though, if you can find the wallpaper images in the screensaver dialog, you get the same effect).
Dekstop wallpaper is like clothing. Except that everyone needs clothing. This collection has plenty of good designs, and plenty that are politely referred to as, everyone’s tastes are different.
