Sure, the food is great. The scenery is inspiring. The traffic is horrible. French women are fetching. But what’s with all this metric stuff? It’s everywhere. Thankfully, conversions are made simple enough for me to understand with a 99-cent iPhone app.
What’s That Amount In English?
Where I’m from we measure distance in minutes. 60 miles from here takes an hour to get there. I know what I weigh in pounds but translating to kilograms requires a computing device.
Some of my American-bred co-workers have figured out the mental calculations necessary to translate miles to kilometers, pounds to kilograms, and feet and inches into, well, whatever they get translated into.
Over the past couple of years I’ve tried out plenty of unit conversion apps for my iPhone. Most are decent enough, but not always the easiest to use.
Amount might be the easiest unit conversion app for the iPhone because it thinks like me. It starts with a category, gives the to and from options, and then does the calculations.
Oh, and the calculations are thorough. Does anyone really need length in leagues?
Does that look simple enough to use?
Enter a number into Amount, select the unit category, and, well, uh, that’s pretty much it.
Amount doesn’t force you to choose from a long list of values with units assigned to the value.
There is an edit mode, though, which lets you create your own favorites list for frequently needed unit conversions.
What if you need to copy a unit’s value to the iPhone’s clipboard? Simply long tap the unit, and it gets copied, ready to be pasted wherever.
Amount comes with a conversion history log, too, and works great with currency conversions. There might be some odd unit that’s not listed but I haven’t run into it yet. This one is just clean and sweet and priced just right.
Leagues? Seriously? People still use that?
