All media. As in books, magazines, DVDs, CDs, games, and anything else that our neighbors, friends, and family want to borrow and forget to return. Here’s how we turned the Mincey household into the Mincey Family Memorial Library for the can’t afford to pay crowd.
Fun, But Not Much Profit
When Jesse and I went to college we never dreamed that our addiction to books would result in a life of supplying reading material to everyone else in the neighborhood.
People borrow what they like, but don’t always bring back what they borrow. Beyond a politician who can tell the truth, what the country needs is a library app for our stuff.
That’s Delicious Library. It’s a Mac app that simply catalogs books, movies, music, video games, gadgets, and pretty much anything else with a name that could be borrowed but not returned because no one can remember who borrowed it or when.
Assume for a moment that the aforementioned scenario fits a description around your household then you know a solution is in order. That’s Delicious Library.
This unique utility is a digital media cataloging app that even looks a bit like a library.
Use your Mac’s built-in iSight camera to scan bar codes from books, DVDs, CDs, or nearly anything else.
Delicious Library tracks down the details.
You can even view your CD and DVD collection side-by-side with your digital collection stored in iTunes.
There’s even a way to view details about your collection, including total retail value, media types, number of movies, and much more.
This is not the library down the street that no one goes to anymore.
Delicious Library is really pretty good to track about any kind of collection you may have.
It integrates nicely ratings, wishlist, and friends recommendations to generate a smart recommendation.
And, because you love others to take your stuff and not return your stuff, the app also remembers who borrowed what and when. All that’s missing is a way to capture a photograph, scan a driver’s license, and issue a family library card to the borrowers.
As much fun as it is to use Delicious Library the latest version comes with a few quirks. Simple scrolling lags on a 3GHz iMac. And, it’s buggy enough that some actions may cause the app to disappear from view.
It would be great if Delicious Library were more stable, or had a way to accept rental payments.
