After all, it’s free, it’s good, it calculates, it converts, it leaves an audit trail, it speaks, it has scientific, programmer, and RPN modes. What more could you want? The way calculators work, if you need just one more functionality that’s not present, you need a different calculator. Here’s one you’ll like.
Solve This, Soulver!
As is the case with many of us in the technical field, I have a collection of calculators– Mac, iPhone, and iPad. Some are easy, some are complicated, others are one-trick pony calculators.
I have one calculator that seems to display more numbers than any other calculator. That alone makes it worth a couple of dollars.
However, if calculations are a part of your life, then you’re probably going to like using Soulver.
As calculators go, this one is not inexpensive at all. It’s easy to say it’s expensive, even when compared to hardware calculators. But Soulver does what no hardware calculator can do.
Think of what you can do with any calculator, a pencil, and a legal pad of paper. All that can be done in Soulver– minus pencil and paper.
See? Soulver even looks different.
It combines text editing with calculations so what you calculate makes sense when you see it annotated with your notes.
In some respects it’s easy to think of Soulver as a non-spreadsheet spreadsheet. It calculates like a spreadsheet, but there’s no complexity to formulas or hidden cells to worry about.
Yet, Soulver has plenty of math and calculation operator functions.
Therein lies the beauty of a new breed of Mac calculator.
It’s simple enough for home budgets, yet has all the tools to manage longer, more complex business budgets.
That’s just the start. Soulver also converts, handles percentages with ease, displays a running total of all your lines of entries.
That includes notations. Calculations can also refer to calculations or numbers in previous lines of a calculation. Setup your own variables to drop into a calculation.
Soulver has iPhone and iPad versions and shares files between them. It also exports calculations into PDFs or HTML files to email. I would hesitate to call Soulver a re-invention of the calculator, but it’s much easier to use when your dealing with complex calculations that require an audit trail.
You’ll find plenty of calculators that have different functions and a lower price, but few make the complex easier to use.
